So I'm flying to Japan in December - Y - three of us, enough points to upgrade one way but as a lowly NB not too confident of that happening. I have already bought a couple of cheap Japan passes for $120 or so each. Will be flying J to Hong Kong and Shanghai next year so should be gold within a year given my domestic travel. I just don't have time to do extra domestic runs here and my three weeks in Japan is my only opportunity to value add.

Is there anything similar to the YUPP tickets in the US to be found in Japan? Does anyone here have any experience on upgrading to F/J in Japan for the extra credits?

There was a note in a thread (somewhere) that said you could upgrade for as little as 1000 Yen, if the ticket then changed to earn at that new class, you’d do very well, but I can’t recall exactly where it was mentioned.

HND (Tokyo) - ITN (Osaka) is $400 each way in 1st @ 120 SCs per leg = $3.33/SC. I'm sure there are others too. I just checked that price for September, might be cheaper at other times of the year.
