THE pilot of a jet carrying 177 passengers was suffering from anxiety and stress when he was restrained from flying his plane as it landed at Melbourne Airport last year.

The captain of the Qantas Boeing 767-300 aircraft reported feeling unwell soon after take-off from Auckland, New Zealand, on May 12. An Australian Transport Safety Bureau report on the incident says the captain left the flight deck and was given oxygen after telling cabin crew he felt nauseous and shaky.

I did fly between AKL and MEL on QF 767 last May, but not that day.

Wonder what would happen if the other pilot needed to go to the loo or worse?

One of the reasons for two pilots is for redundancy. These situations are so rare that further redundancy is unwarranted.

Note that from top-of-decent until landing, a member of the cabin crew that also has flying experience sat in the coughpit and assisted the First Officer by monitoring radio communications etc. And the Captain returned to the coughpit for the landing as well, although he played no active roll.

But I expect the FO was ready for a bio-break by the time they arrived  . I expect it if occurred soon after takeoff on a longer sector the FO would have made a decision to return or divert rather than continue solo for 6 or 8 hours.

Either that or would have a dry cleaning bill to send to the airline upon arrival
