Hi guys,

We have an upcoming trip to Bali over Chrimbo booked almost a year ago using points and other expenses on the card.

TBH with the travel insurance I had not yet decided whether to buy a new policy or rely on the existing AMEX policy from the card. I dragged my feet on this as usually our family holidays were tag-ons to extended work trips, so the company policy usually covered, so it wasn't front of mind (though was something I planned to look into properly before we went). With the volcano now erupting and voiding any new insurance coverage for "eruption related issues" as of a few days ago it seems as though the option or benefit of getting a separate policy doesn't seem worth it (as much).

Does anyone have any insight into how useful/not useful the associated card cover for the Velocity Platinum card actually is?

Generally its no better or worse than any other travel insurance cover. Even if you are only looking at paid for insurance you need to check if the options you need are available. Your question is too vague to give a specific answer.

One thing I have noticed that AMEX insurance doesnt cover, is for alternative travel to get to a special event. (wedding etc). On the other hand they cover for full cancellation if outgoing flight is delayed by 24 hours, and most others require you to have lost ~ 50% or more of the trip before you can cancel.

In any case, the Volcano is not erupting, and its still only Level 3. Unless it goes Kaboom AND the ash cloud goes toward the airport there isnt much to worry about - the prevailing winds blow the other direction for this season.

We are in exactly the same situation, dragged our feet on our travel insurance and now relying on the credit card insurance for any cancellation losses due to the volcano.

When I have had a cancelled or postponed golf tournament they have looked after me quick as well. No issue. Good luck.

The airlines cancellling your flights is an event outside of your control, and the AMEX insurance covers you for cancellation costs if you opt to cancel the trip after 24 hours of delays. Its a very broad clause in the policy.

That is the claim you are making, that the airline has cancelled your flights. It will be interesting to see how the insurers honour such claims. AFAIK ash clouds is a weather condition, not a volcanic eruption - dont quote me though :)

Thanks guys. Guess we will either find out how good it is in a month, or not have to worry about it all. Glad to hear they seem at least as responsive as using anyone else.
