Thanks guys, just quickly. what is the "credit shell"....is it a nickname or reference to something? Or is that what a credit is literally called?

It's the VA term for a credit held for you by the airline.

Is the free flight restricted to Australia and NZ? Or is booking to Fiji allowed?

The T&Cs they sent me a month or so ago when I got this card does not incl SYD-PER-SYD.

Is there anyway to use the free flight to gain SCs? I have read over the threads about cancelling and rebooking w virgin...but seems to be a bit of debate as to wether this works anymore?

Curious though. If you cancel your free flight, and rebook through AMEX travel, would that new rebook service be eligible for SCs?

Id imagine fares would be higher on routes to PHE/KTA. Anyone done these two for the refund?

From SYD it is east coast only, but you can do PER-SYD-PER

My T&Cs for Perth only states Broome, Karratha, Newman and Port Hedland.

I'll give them a ring at some stage and check as there seems to be varying thoughts on destinations available.

My T&Cs shows very restricted destinations and I will be cancelling this card before the 12 months are out.

Did anyone else get mail this evening stating that from 1 September 2013 the earn rate will drop from 1.5 points per $1 spent to 1 point?

I got two letters (the same one twice...) stating from 1 Sep the points were changing, but not as straight as you indicate.

They were more inline with what is on here: American Express: American Express Velocity Platinum Card (see the bit under 'Velocity Awards')
Which i knew when i joined a few months ago. But i thought it was 22 July as per that page. not 1 September.

My 1st anniversary on the cc is April 14. If I cancel the card before that and I already have the flight booked for say July, would flight that be honoured?

What about if I cancelled the flight after cancelling the card, would I still get a shell w' VA? Thanks a lot.

Amex informed me it would depend on for which year of membership that flight related to. That is, did you pre-book your flight for the 15/04/13 through 14/04/14 year? If so, Amex informed me they would levy the next year's annual fee even if I cancelled the card. If the flight was for the year ending 14/04/13 then no issue.

I can't comment on the credit shell situation though.

Ok, that sounds reasonable and I am doing this current card year. Still wonder about the shell though.

I'm very interested in knowing the answer to this too. It seems that cancelling the Amex flight and getting a credit with Virgin isn't possible anymore, but surely rebooking with AMEX would get a flight in a class that got SC.

I did. And very generous points too. I had to wear the Amex change fee though.

Yikes, $650 all up to do the change! Looks like I'll be sticking to economy without SC after all :(

I booked SYD-PER return, cancelled and received a credit. I then phoned AMEX up and used the credit to book MEL-SYD-OOL in J... all up cost me an extra $230. Worth it for 80 SC.
