Following the recent 100/40k referral promotion, Amex have reduced the referral offer for this card to 60,000 points for the applicant and 20,000 points for the referrer, when you spend $3,000 on eligible purchases within 3 months of application. This offer is live until 28 May 2024.

While I imagine most would prefer to wait for a bigger offer, if anyone does wish to apply for this card in the meantime, it would be greatly appreciated if you'd use our referral link, or another one posted by another member of AFF below.

Some fast points about the card:
  • This card has a large $450 annual fee. This is somewhat offset by the $450 qantas travel credit, as well as regular cashback/statement credit promotions – often discussed here on AFF (be sure to subscribe to the cashback thread so you don’t miss these offers).
  • The $450 credit is applied retrospectively to your account a few days after you select to use it when making a qantas booking through amex travel. Late last year, mine was made available to use about a week after the account was activated.
  • When I last applied, the card had a $65k minimum income and 3k minimum credit limit. In recent experience, the selection of a limit appears comes late in the application, after your credit check is done. The credit limit you ultimately select/receive is reported to credit reporting bodies alongside other repayment and account information once the card is open.
  • Amex usually award bonus points as soon as you hit the spend criteria, even in the first month. However, the first statement period is usually an obscure length so if you are seeking the bonus points quickly, it may be worth completing the minimum spend of $3000 as soon as possible on receiving the card. Alternatively, if you want to delay it for points club timing, it’s important to keep this in mind.
  • Amex regularly offer bonus points for adding supplementary/additional cardholders (recently, up to 15k bonus points). I have seen success by not adding any extra cardholders during the initial application, but instead waiting until a special offer arises, usually within a few months. So far, I've added Mrs Excel and another family member on seperate 5k and 15k promotions.
  • Qantas sometimes has promotions for "20k extra points for first-time holders" or similar. In the past, people have seen success registering for these promotions, but then applying for a card elsewhere (such as via a referral link) and still receiving award points. It's worth checking the qantas website and registering for these promotions whenever you're opening a new card.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.
