Do you have to have an Amex platinum edge to get the referral bonus? What happens if you have a different type of Amex? Are you still eligible for the bonus?

You can only refer within the class of card that you have. If you have a Plat.Edge you cannot refer a business card for instance.

In my experience, they only find out by googling themselves, a "search on the internal database" gives a negative result on their own promotions.

It was only after doing an internal database search that I emailed. The issue I see is that of not receiving points for a referral. You call them up, email, whatever to press the point and they turn around and tell you your account is not linked to any referral promotion. After missing a couple of referral bonii due to differing card type I became a bit sceptical.

as long as you have no amex or a bank labeled amex(anz,west pac etc) you still get the bonus and free card.

I thought you could get the bonus provided you hadn't had an Amex issued by American Express during the past 12 months. Do bank-issued e.g., NAB and ANZ) Amex also interfere with this bonus?

Bank issued Amex don't count. They are not issued by American Express Australia Limited.
