Amex platinum Charge annual fee increase

Hi - has anyone had their accor advantage plus membership come up for renewal? Mine expires at the end of October and was wondering how I get it renewed for the next year given that I had just paid the full $1200 fee!

Mine is also coming up for renewal and I expect it will be renewed without issue. However I was surprised to note on the Platinum website that it states complimentary membership is available from 1 October 2013 to 30 September 2015. This certainly sounds as though it is not going to be an ongoing platinum benefit, and might go the same way as the Marco Polo Gold membership.

Mine is coming up for renewal in a couple days. Made a call cancel the cards and apart from being recognised for being with them for x years was not offered anything to keep the account.
Which just reminded myself - need to cancel the reserve CC too.

So what is everyone's theory in regards to Amex Platinum Charge and their strategy for price increase with reduced benefits?

It seems they must be losing alot of clientele with no effort to retain long or short term customers. I just don't get it - is it as simple as they just don't care?

Their strategy is that there are enough wankers out there who only care about status and not value. Pretty simple really.

I kept mine for 1 year back when it was $900. Banked the bonus points, enjoyed all the hotel/travel benefits for 1 (sometimes 2 years), and ditched the card come re-newal. There is absolutely NO VALUE in this card anymore.

for all the money they pay in advertising to get new clients why not keep the ones you have happy. I dont get it either!

Unlike all the armchair experts here who think they represent the majority of customers

A $300 increase in the fee is pocket change for most people holding a Plat Charge card

I am sure Amex has crunched the numbers and they are happy with their decisions

Just like most companies the focus is always on NEW customers

Well not if you lost more OLD customers than you gained NEW customers... it's always costly for companies to sign up new customers (e.g. advertising, promos, giveaways etc) so customer retention should be very much a focus of any marketing departments out there... including AMEX ;)

I’m sure it is..and at times I think they do laps.. but in general a good company. I would like to see a return to promos like 5pts/per $, 10pts/$..they were the good old days… & pigs might fly!!

I think it,s unfair that a new customer is offered 80,000points on sign up .I pay the same $1200.00 fee but as a long time card holder, since 1977 ,I am not offered anything for my loyalty. If you say you will cancel ,they just say thanks for the memories.

Called about where the heck is my replacement card (long story short I've ordered a replacement card years ago, never arrived/activated and for some reason they think I already got a chip + PIN card) so sorted that out and inquired about retention. Got offered 36k points straight up take it or leave it kind of thing, ask me have I used the benefits like Priority Pass....nah thanks mate leave a note on my account please and I'll sleep on it.

Have anyone taken the points but cancel the card later on?

has anyone been actually told that we wont be keeping the reserve with the NZ free flt?

Trimmers, judging but your post, you have been around the block a few times more than me. I agree it is totally unfair, but you would be naive to think that banks are not looking out for new customers. In this day and age of mass consumerism, there are so many offers out there where value can actually be found, be it sign on bonuses, balance transfers or no interest on purchases. Churning through credit cards (but not too often so as not to negatively affect your credit rating) is the new name of the game.

And not just limited to banks and other financial products. Thanks to privatisation you can churn through telecomms, utilities etc.

I'll see if I can get them to increase it to 50k or no deal. Meh just burnt through a pile of points today so I kinda need a top up.

Interesting - I tried really hard last year at renewal time but they wouldn't budge - will give it a go again comes renewal time next month, guess 36k is better than nothing :(

Spoke to a mate who's on the same boat and got offered 36k too. They didn't budge when he asked for an escalation.
