AMEX not accepted or surcharge

I agree & fully support your last point.:D

Won't happen. Now that all the Big 4 have a dual AMEX VISA/MC card option. And the smaller banks are jumping on board, because they get more in % commission, won't happen my friend. Sorry, just they way the world works.

I know it won't happen, just a wish maybe one day the AMEX will be accepted as many as V/M.

I noticed ANZ's latest ad campaign uses an assumption of 30% Amex and 70% Visa for purchases when quoting points earning for your normal 'monthly spend'.

Assuming a reasonable chunk of that spend would be supermarket food & fuel which can generally go on Amex that leaves a lot of bills that aren't payable with Amex.

Interesting assumption. Perhaps there is always the dreaded surcharge that you dont want to pay for AMEX and use Visa instead? Or in some cases, yes some merchants don't take the card! But you can go to merchants who do. Its a choice. Frankly, I don't have any problem using my AMEX for everything but I will go out of my way to use it rather that a Visa card. Its just my choice. Having said that, I do live in inner city Sydney where I can even pay my council rates on AMEX, my strata levies, rent (for the property I live in and the ones I rent out) groceries, rego, insurance - Not an issue. I guess it comes down to demographic and geography in the end.

I'm just wishing that PayPal and AMEX will hurry up and get their acts together! I've just integrated it with a new business website... and it's so annoying that I can't accept AMEX from clients! At the moment, the volume of credit card transactions I'll be processing is quite low, so it's not worth setting up a terminal or payment gateway just for Amex & Diners... but I just wish PayPal AU would be more like most of the other countries and just take AMEX already...

And I looked at "2Checkout" who would let me process Amex & Diners... but they want $49USD just to set it up... and then 5.5% of every transaction for each card type! And only pay you once a week! Don't think so... haha

EDIT: I've also noticed on the Diners merchant search that PayPal is listed (correct address and phone number etc...) maybe that's something they're working on too! (Wouldn't be hard with their interoperability with Discover - just change a little bit of code to process in Australia instead!)

Not a surprise, as I mentioned before, more and more merchants are dumping AMEX. So far, even paypal still doesn't accept it. What are we expecting?

More merchants to keep signing on as more banks keep issuing co-brand Amex cards that incentivise Amex spending over Visa and Mastercard?

Eh??? This is a case of Amex dumping the merchant, not vice versa!

Well, in the past few days, I've spent money at quite a few places - and generally had no AMEX problems. And where a merchant has a minimum purchase requirement (applying to all cards), it's been easy to reach without needing to spend more money. Eg:

  • Birch Carroll & Coyle - AX, no surcharge, no minimum
  • Cafe in the city for dinner - AX, no surcharge, $10 minimum (but when paying for dinner, it's clearly not a problem)
  • Random bar I'd never been to before - AX, no surcharge, CC bar tabs ok
  • Taxi home - AX, usual Cabcharge fee, but it's the same for all cards...
  • Parking - Visa/MC only, although if you're really keen you can pre-pay on their website to reserve a space (Visa/MC/AX/Diners), but it's about $4 more expensive to do it that way
  • Subway - AX, no surcharge, only $5 minimum
  • $1.95 bottle of water at McDonalds - AX, no surcharge, no minimum
  • Random new restaurant that had only opened recently - AX, no surcharge
  • Concert tickets - AX, no surcharge, no added booking fee
  • Dessert and concert programs at the venue - AX, no surcharge, $10 minimum (but this was reached very easily)
Quite happy really :D

I find a lot of the smaller merchants happily accept Amex without surcharge.

Where I work in Toowong there is a fruit shop, 2 chemists, there are two $2 shops, priceline, Coles, Woolworths, Kmart, Gloria Jeans etc. Just about covers anything I will need most of the time.

F1rst Duty Free in MEL arrivals charges 1% surcharge on all credit cards.

Didn't Amex have a huge spiel a month or two ago about how SYD duty free had no Amex surcharge? F1rst is owned by the same group (Nuance Singapore).

Also Rydges still appears to have their surcharge. 3.5% Amex/Diners/JCB, 1.5% all other cards.

Syd duty free applied 1% surcharge to all cards on Wed morning.

Perhaps they meant that there was no surcharge specific to Amex cards - in that Amex is treated just like Visa or MasterCard...

Although it is strange to advertise "no Amex surcharge" for a business that charges 1% for all card use (inc. Amex...) lol

Does anyone else recall a communication from Amex regarding Sydney Duty Free and surcharges that was sent out (postcard perhaps?) in the last few months? I had a feeling it was tied in with a promotion regarding using MR points for gift vouchers.

Melbourne Airport parking has certainly stopped its surcharge on Amex.

I was there last month at F1rst and was charged 1% by using Amex. Oppss.. Didnt read it referred to parking.. meh.. just woke up... eyes are playing on me..

Baby Bunting is now charging either 1.9% or 2.1% surcharge.

That leaves Baby R Us as the remaining baby shop that don't charge surcharges...

WOW.

I walked into a Retravision store that charges 6% for using Amex. Very over the top IMHO.

I have never had reason to contact Amex about surcharges so now I need someone to please point me to where I lodge the 'notice' (Please)
