Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

Just cancelled the charge/reserve/explorer/edge. Guy on the phone said that some customers thought that the changes to the Amex point system are favourable (really!!?? Must be from a different planet) Its a good feeling to get rid of all four at once and churning is definitely the only way to go with cards!
'and churning is definitely the only way to go with cards'

Staggers me that some people just don't get this. And just aren't prepared to accept that what they've been doing is not the best strategy for maximising points.

But I agree 100%.

I've just got back onto AMEX after 18 months exclusion period ended. Didn't miss it and scored a large number of bonus points during that 18 month period by churning that I could never have matched in spending or other benefits if I'd kept the AMEX.

AMEX cards are just like any other card. They deserve to be churned.

Called up 2 days ago ~8pm for Phillipines call centre for my AX plat charge and said:

"hello, as it's the new FY I'm considering my finances and wanted to know if there's any offers on my account?"

Straight away offered 50k pts. Accepted and credited to acct within the hour.

Not bad for 2min phone call.

Cancelled my card, then reinstated shortly after with an additional 100k points.

explorer card, amex member for 5 years.

Does anyone know if reinstating cards creates a new credit enquiry on your credit file?

Maybe not 100%, there are alot of people who shouldn't be playing with credit cards at all, and shouldn't be encouraged to apply for more without proper management.

I'm self employed and have a pita time churning, low personal income, reasonable business spend (no where the level of some here), churning doesn't work for me, although I have applied for 5 cards over the last 2 years.

My signon bonii have probably amounted to about 10% of my points earned in that time.

Maybe 'and churning is definitely the only way to go with cards if you have a high income and a low spend, own your own house, kids have left, a middle aged white man' is more accurate, (maybe not the last bit) .

On this basis I shouldn't be churning!

I'd let the banks know they shouldn't be giving me so many new cards.

Seeing things in such stark black and white is usually a sign of a limited imagination and/or poor cognitive skills.
Hopefully.

But I will waive at you when in F/J.

I you didn't make a new application or increase the credit limit, no new enquiry should have been generated.

But can you explain more about 'then reinstated shortly after with an additional 100k points'?

Not saying you shouldn't if you can, I would if I could, but as the sign says, 'don't ask for credit as refusal offen offends', for me it's wastes time though

Sure. Basically called up this morning with the intention to cancel the card, but didn't specifically mention I wanted to cancel, just mentioned I was just consolidating my finances and wanted to know what offers were available for me. After alot of stuffing about they said the best they could offer me was a lower interest rate, which I was not interested in.

So the representative recommended me to cancel the card so she could see what do after (not really sure what she meant by that) but by this stage I just wanted to cancel the card so I proceeded, straight after the card was cancelled she offered me 100k points if i reinstated the card so i agreed.

It's looking more and more to me like a new policy for those who call up and just ask for it around renewal time, or least a higher success rate

When I called, I hadn't even finished my sentence before they offered me the 65k to not cancel, just the mention that the annual fee was almost due.

No such luck here with three calls made last AF renewal

Okie, I'm calling AMEX today and see if I can snatch an offer :D

Or it could due to my spend history, will let you know next year, since my Amex spend has fallen off a cliff this year due to the enhancements

I just got off the phone with AMEX. I was also offered the lower interest rate and nothing else. I asked if there were any offers for me, the agent on the phone said none.

He asked what kind of offers I was looking for and I hinted at Qantas points. He said that he is not authorized to issue points and said "hope you understand".

So, no points for me :(

Not sure what I did wrong ... is it may be a case of HUCA ? or should I try during Australian business hours?

If it makes any difference - I've got a Qantas AMEX Ultimate
