Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

wait, so what is the strategy you took? cancelled edge, applied explorer.. approved and sent card.. how did you revive the edge?

I tried to get the reserve, but they wanted me to cancel 2 of the 3 cards (since i hold DJ/explorer/edge). I am quite bummed I am missing out on 400 travel credit, i don't mind losing the DJs amex but I'd still need to remove another..

I think I fluked it. I cancelled Edge as wanted reserve to offset part of Platinum Charge annual fee. I had second thoughts and asked for Edge to be reinstated (have 3 months from when you cancel a card to re activate it).
They told me would have to cancel another. I said would have to be Reserve. Asked if I could keep it with minimum limit and said I wanted it as companion to the charge. They said they would try. No one notified me but saw it was still active.

Recently approved for the David Jones cards and received 40,000 points , looking at really want to cancel the card before the $99 annual fee hit ,

They offer extra 30,000 points bonus to keep the card and thank you for giving Amex another chance , i couldn't say no with the offer .

Great customer services from Amex

After reading some post back do i need to keep the card for another year or i can just call up and cancel it next month as i want to apply for the Plat Edge to go with Explorer .

Called up a few weeks ago to cancel velocity platinum and move the card limit over to my explorer card. Had no ulterior motives and was surprised when they came back with offer of 100k points to keep card. Obviously said yes. The spend on the card was very minimal as I use the explorer mostly. Only used the velocity for my uber account. Told my friend to do this and he said he did it a few days ago but only offered annual fee removal.

Yeah, resets on the anniversary of your card.

The missus and my mum has the velocity card, which they don't use, so going to get them to cancel and see if/what they offer as retention.

Yeah my other cards are high spenders (explorer and business plat charge card). That may be the case here. I was just shocked when the offered it. IIRC, I don't think they asked me why I want to cancel.

Called up on Tuesday it now already been 3 days and still no sign of points . I'll give them until Monday to see what happen

Recently applied for Platinum Reserve card as a complimentary companion to Platinum Charge card, primarily to use $400 worth of travel credit it offers.
Have not made a single transaction on this card yet!
Made a booking using the travel credit 2 days back.
Called the other night to cancel the card as I'm planning to also cancel my Platinum Charge card in couple of days time.
Was offered 30k MR points to keep my free Platinum Reserve card.

How could I refuse ? :mrgreen:

Dang, I should have done the same with my plat reserve - but was pushing it dangerously close to the $1200 annual fee hitting, so happy to forgo this bonus to keep my $1200 and actually cancel the card. Might try for Mrs tizey and her cards next.

That said, called up DJ Amex to cancel that to start 18month sideline period for next Amex promo.. offered 25,000 DJ Amex points to hold it. Total spend on it might be $300. Couldn't say no to that.

What time of day/which number are you all calling to get the offers? Does HUACA help here? I gave them a call for my Velocity Platinum card, which no longer makes sense with the change in points earning structure. Can't do anything about the annual fee, but 15k bonus was offered. That's not really worth it to keep the card though...

Cancelling both of miss blingy's edge & explorer accounts....to start the 18 month Amex-free waiting period.

She called seperately for both cards first, 15k offered for each card. Points moved out. Will now cancel accounts.

Easy 30k points for a few minutes on the phone.
She is never a happy camper about doing so but I always remind her about how much she enjoys J

I'm waiting til my points hit my SPG account, then I'm closing the DJ Amex. Will be a supplementary cardholder for mrs tizey's account, so using that as a reason (dont want to hold two accounts.. just not worth the hassle).
