Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

Signed up in May 2016, got a flight for the Mrs worth $700.
Signed up Mrs and Mum to get the flights, which I would happily have paid their annual fee for them forever as it's worth it from DRW.

Cancelled today, offered Velocity Escape. Passed.
Offered 8k. Passed and Cancelled.

Have ANZ QFF Black, and NAB Plat already, ANZ Travellers en route.

Will be back at AMEX in 18 months depending on offers available.

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

Myself and Mrs Mac have cancelled 3 x Amex cards previously, on each I hoped for a points offer but instead got offered a different card so we went ahead and cancelled. I rang up today to cancel Velocity Amex to make way for Explorer (genuinely wanting to cancel for the first time) and was offered 23k points to keep it. I worked out before call that IF offered the minimum I needed was 22,500, which makes for a break even if Explorer drops its sign on bonus to 80k points in Feb. Incredible that they came in just 500 over my keep number!

A few data points on this card, flight has been used, around. 1k-2k/month spend (mostly on statement credit offers in last few months), annual fee not due until July, I have 3 Supplementary card holders.

Do people usually transfer all their points to an airline partner before ringing Amex and say 'I'm going to cancel my AmEx card'? Or wait till what they offer etc.?

Move/use all points before you call.

Be prepared to follow through completely with your cancellation.

The sensible ones do. (Or at least whatever their preferred partner is including Hotels).

Didn't evacuate my points on the last couple of occasions.

Cancelled my Velocity Plat last night (so I could apply for explorer) and was offered nothing.
However, I was told that any outstanding points I had earned but hadn't been transferred yet would be transferred to velocity even after the card is cancelled.

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

Annual fee posted for my 2nd year on the old Priceline 1st year free Plat Edge.

5 minute phone call and my Ascent account is 23k richer.

Now just have to see if I can get the 130k from Gateway over.

You don't need to transfer out your points, it doesn't make any difference.

I got 84,000 to keep my Gold Charge card.

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

Around $15k - $20k a month.

I believe 84,000 is the max they offer at the moment, as I know someone who spends a lot more and got the same offer.

That kind of spend takes close to centurion card so that justify their retention bonus.

Have been invited to get the Centurion Card before but couldn't justify the price.

Got the same offer on my Platinum Edge as well, on a lower spend level.

;)

I think each cardmember is given an incentive points figure and that figure is applicable across all cards under the member. I've got 36k points for each of my cards (there's 3), Hammando got the same 86k for his 2 cards, well that just established a trend but we need more data points to confirm.

With the free EDGE promo going on atm, do you think they will extend the card for another year for free? instead of going through the whole cancelling and reapplying process? not really interested in free points unless its over 60k

I've never transferred my points out before calling and always been offered a bonus. Of course it is impossible for me to know if I would have been offered more if I had transferred them out - either way I've been happy with what I've been offered though.

In my case, annually, when the statement with the fee arrives.

Out of interest has anyone had success with bonus points after claiming the free flight (eg plat edge, qf ultimate etc).
