Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

Got another 36k points for that Edge card for 8 minutes on the phone.

Do you mind me asking how much you put through it?

I got 36k for Platinum Charge card. I only out through $100k in a year on it as have other higher earning cards. Figured I got that offer because my annual fee is steep at $1200. Interested to see what the drivers might be for other cards.

Averaging $80k on all Amex for the last couple of years though there's been a spike in a last few months.

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

I wonder if it has anything to do with referrals as well?
I have had 6 referrals from my Velocity Amex and had 30k offered in August and just given another 36k.
put around 70k through the card in the last 12 months maybe a little less.

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

Was offered 23k on the Platinum Charge card on a reduce affiliated rate of $950. Put through around $30k of expenses last year.

I have never tried to get more points for my credit cards when trying to 'cancel'
What do you guys say?
Do you straight out say how many points can you offer me to keep the card or do you beat around the bush and let them come up with it?
My wife's edge is coming up for renewal we are going to keep it anyway, but might try and milk it for points
cheers

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

I called up asking about my anniversary date and then said that I was thinking of cancelling due to holding another card at the same time. I've called up other banks though and straight up said, I'm going to cancel what will you give me and have yielded similar results.

i asked if my annual fee could be waved in view of how long I'd had the card and my annual spend. Sorry sir, can't wave the annual fee but here's some points as recognition of your value to us. Worth more than the fee.

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

I've been a Charge Card holder since 2010 and don't put through huge amounts on this card (last year approx $50k) and have been paying $750 a year for the last 3 years. Last year when i called up to say i was "thinking" about cancelling they gave me 25k in points but said my annual fee would go up to the normal $1200.

So i decided to stay quiet and see if my fee would be $1200 or not and they still only charged me a reduced annual fee of $750 which i can justify.

Just thought i'd share :)

you are kidding me. given the annual fee and the spend that's all the AFFer is offered. huge 'dislike'

the girl at amex said that is what the system spit out

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

$30k spend is quite low though.

sure but it's a huge annual fee especially compared to what we pay and spent and the bonus points we earn and were offered

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

Most charge card holders gets 35k or 48k retention bonus on much higher spend but they are on a $1200 fee, so my offer whilst disappointing it was acceptable.

Platinum card gets $700 travel credit a year so on a $950 annual rate it is not that bad considering all of the other benefits it bring.

I have saved heaps on the hotel status and FHR rate.

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

By the way, have anyone managed to get points for the complimentary Reserve card?

Asked me why I was cancelling it, well your account team told me I can't have the Explorer and I just want the points.

Gave me 36k to go away :)

I know this is technically not the correct place, being a subforum of Amex Rewards, but thought it most relevant - just cancelled my ANZ QF Black, citing large annual fee, and strongly hinted I was looking for points, I was offered a 50% reduction on the annual fee but nothing else. Card cancelled.
