I am wondering if anyone has had dealings with AMEX and their gold card travel insurance, particularily whether the cover is any good, and whether they actually pay out claims.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Does anyone have a perspective on the OP's question?

I'm about to pay for the annual trip to visit the outlaws and need to decide which card to put it on. The Rewards Maximiser for the extra 1/2 point, or the Gold for the insurance?

Since Amex upped it to proper travel insurance a few years back (when the annual fee jumped significantly) I have always used the Gold to pay for flights. I did originally spend a bit of time double checking whether policy was comparable to 3rd party overseas insurance (I think I used to pay around $400 for a month to the UK) on the key things such as liability, medical etc and it was pretty good.

Having never claimed against the travel can't comment on the payout, however did do an Amex claim for a DVD repair under the extended warranty and payout was fine.

Personally I would pass on the points to avoid spending real $$
