American Express Platinum Charge Card enhancement - Virgin Lounge access

My wife took a flight yesterday from Perth to Adelaide on Virgin, and she is a supp card holder - and she got into the lounge. Having said that, she told me that at the lounge the front desk person had no idea about plat charge cardholders being allowed in, and mumbled something about thinking he'd seen it somewhere. So whilst he opened a folder to look it up the whole Fremantle Dockers team came in, and he just told my wife to go on in!

So I guess we're still a little clueless about whether supp cardholders can get in, but it looks like the Perth lounge staff might need some education.

Hopefully Virgin will train all their lounge staff to allow AMEX plat charge holders in....I wonder if this information was in the folder he was looking in :)

I'd like to throw another spanner in the works: If one were to cancel their card (perhaps due to the recent AMEX platinum downgrades), could one simply hold onto it and flash it at the lounge staff to be waved in? If they don't swipe the card, how are they to tell it's been cancelled?

Perhaps Amex should issue some sort of lounge card to Amex plat charge card holders. I would not want the lounges filled with people who should not be there.

They do - it's called priority pass, but DJ stopped accepting it for access a while ago. Maybe PP weren't paying enough per visit?

Cheers

My experience

I rang the lounge in Melbourne and also the Gold Coast before I took the flight. I am the supp card holder.
Melb lounge just asked me to describe my card - which I did - no numbers asked for and she said - yes that is the AMEX charge card - you are very welcome.
When I arrived at the lounge in Melbourne last week I handed my card and boarding pass over and was welcomed in.
Happy with lounge - no where near as busy as Qantas which was great.
Gold Coast said that I was welcome but my card needed to be linked with Velocity - I was not sure if it was or not.
But this morning when I checked in - they just did the same as Melbourne - checked my card and boarding pass and was welcomed in.
Gold Coast lounge was very nice as well and not crowded at all.
Nothing was mentioned about whether I was a supp card holder or main card holder.

Over all - very happy.
It will be interesting to see what happens when hubby and I travel together!!!

Hope this helps

When you travel with hubby, maybe enter in 5 mins apart :)

yes- have thought of that - or maybe we can be brother and sister...:p
Still we don't often travel Virgin together so doubt it will be a real problem

I wonder if I can enter with my 20 month old daughter with the amex plat charge? Not sure if they will be nice to me....

Has anyone tried this with a Platinum Edge? Hoping yes lol.

Platinum Edge does not have Virgin Lounge access as a benefit. From details above where a poster called to discuss the lounge staff asked the person to describe their card - presumably they were comparing it to a picture of a Platinum Charge... Quite a distinctive card so don't get angry when you get swiftly turned away

I used mine to gain lounge access in Sydney a couple of weeks ago.

Lounge Staff checked my boarding pass was in their system and then waived me through.

Excellent. Did they check your plat charge card number? Just curious if they know the difference between a primary card holder and supp card holder....

The lady seemed more interested in the boarding pass.
I don't know what they would check the card against.
My wife and I will be flying Virgin together in early Novemebr and will both try and get in.

Ok thanks. Does your wife have a supp card?

What I would like to hear is if people have tried bringing in a toddler? like 2 years old...Or shouldn't I bother trying?

My wife has a supplementary card.
I thought we might walk in one behind the other and go to different people.
If they asked my wife if her card was a supplementary she wouldn't lie.
Hopefully they won't ask.
