Phantom availability for CX showing on both QF and BA doesn't necessarily have anything to do with a connection. Sectors searched individually can still run in to the same problem.
I read something to this effect on Flyertalk

Hi, firstlyEach member of our family has an account so I needed about approx 150k points per person. I purchased most before the merger as I was part of United airways which had no point restriction. Future flights will be an issue. I did read that you can purchase or gift 100k a year but this does not include bonus points so I wud assume buying points providing bonus points is better than buying discount mile offers. You can also I think share up to 200k although the this would only be beneficial if a really good share offer came up. This is my assumption based on reading some notices though so u might need to confirm this. Good luck

Will be the same 35K for all of zone Asia 2, which is everything except for Japan, Korea and Mongolia which is zone Asia 1 (and 45K).

There is an official AA chart out there buried in the AA website that lists China in Asia 1, but it's incorrect. China is Asia 2 as reflected elsewhere on the AA site.

Redepositing of miles following a cancellation is $150 for the primary passenger on a booking, and $25 for each subsequent passenger.

That's US$150 ...

However the AA redemption will have much less +++ due to AAdvantage not having airline fuel surcharges on QF/CX.

If you do need to cancel such a booking_ I have seen advice to hang on until the last minute in case a schedule change may enable a free cancelation.

Thanks - appreciate your thoughts. Have tried to 'gift' points to my wife, and vive versa, with no luck as the system keeps on saying your max is 100K per annum. Might have to get my kids to open an account each and have them try.
