am I getting to fat for my seatbelt [Shorter belts in J on VA 737s?]

Hi all I have no idea if this has been talked about so I will just ask, I have only started to fly virgin in the last couple of months as they have a business class service. So far I have enjoyed the experience.

Yesterday I had a flight to SYD on Virgin and noticed that the seat belts in the business class seats are a littel snug, now I know that Dr S, She who must be obeyed, has suggested that I could lose a pound or two.

On my return flight I was on a Qantas flight and the seatbelt was very spacious, so why is it so, as the great Dr Julius Sumner Miller would say.

I also was thinking that I'm definitely not the biggest person to fly, so do Virgin carry a lot of seat belt extenders.:mrgreen::shock:

I have also noticed that seatbelts are smaller on Virgin especially in business class.

I thought it must have been me too!

Admittedly I'm not the skinniest bloke, but that extra bit of seatbelt seems to be getting shorter and shorter :mrgreen:

Now you mention it, I do recall thinking something similar...again not a twig myself but by no means overweight.

I can't comment on the VA seat belts, but if oy think they're tight, you should try the seat belts in Y on MH B737s - I normally leave my belt done up for the whole flight (which might be 12 hrs or longer) but on the short flight from MNL to KUL and then from KUL to CGK, I felt like I was being cut in half. Easily the shortest seat belts I've ever come across.

You're right, they're not that long. Being a large b@stard I get one every flight, and delight the crew by returning it to the front when in Y . I think they have four on each narrow-body.
Slightly OT but the NZ A320s for TT seem to have larger than normal ones in Y (however this might be due to the average size of the diaspora).

I've been paranoid about this for weeks. MEL-SYD in J, the seatbealt was fine. SYD-OOL and it was snug.

I can only think that the seatbelts used are standard across each class, while the width of the seats differ between classes. Since it has further to travel length wise, the belt is less forgiving travelling on the, er, great circle route. However I have no hard facts to back this up.

Recently I did a status run SYD - MEL - ADL - MEL - SYD.

Forward trip was in Y (exit row) & return was in J.

I had no trouble on the SYD - MEL flight in 13A but really had to struggle on the next flight an hour or so later on the next aircraft in seat 13F.

J was a little better.

I can concur with wayne bourke's assertion - there is certainly more seatbelt on QF than on VA (when thinking of J). I'm 6'3" and 95kgs; so whilst my optinum weight is probably 90 kgs, I'm not overweight and the excess belt is certainly less on VA than QF.
