First time post. Seeking advice from the learned community.

I am trying to book a flight using QFF award points for a CX flight from HKG to New York.

The only option in the class I want is to book HKG to BOS, with an AA connection in New York (flight goes CX to New York, then AA to BOS)

There are no award seats available on the direct HKG to New York flight without the BOS connection.

What are the implications of getting off the plane in New York and not catching the AA connection to BOS?

Thanks!

That one is a bit odd... I would say it is more a system error. Redemptions are generally sector for sector so you shouldn't have to "force" a connection.

It could possibly be false availability on the CX leg (which is fairly common) and it won't actually allow you to book when you get to the final stage.

However that said... There's nothing at all stopping you not getting on the BOS flight. You'll need to collect your bags anyway in New York

If there are any more flights on the same booking (such as the return flights) they will all be cancelled from the no-show on the previous sector. If it is the last flight on the booking then you may get away with it. Note that checked bags will be tagged to BOS, but will need to be collected and carried through customs at NY anyway.

Actually it's quite common on CX to see different award availability on xx_-HKG vs xx_-HKG-YYY due to "married sectors ". But I wouldn't imagine this applies to connections to other airlines at other ports, so would expect it is an error.

provided it's a one way ticket, there are no problems getting out at New York. You have to go through immigration/customs anyway, and you just don't turn up for the ongoing flight. You may or may not choose to inform AA that you will/won't be catching the flight to BOS. Most times it's not really going to matter as airlines have plenty of pax on stand-by or waiting for the coveted First class seat (if you're connecting in F).

If it's a return, no can do as the rest of the ticket will be cancelled.

I made an award booking through QF on CX metal last week and had lots of problems doing it online with false availability. When I rang the person on the phone seemed to be seeing totly different availability to what I could see. If you call you might find a similar situation. They waived the phone booking fee for me too because of it.

Save yourself the points and just call. I spent 45 mins explaining to a QF agent that I wanted to change to BKK-HKG-SYD and she said that it seats weren't showing up looking at BKK-SYD, however if she did them separately she could see them. She was rather dumbfounded.

I have seen the same thing booking BA awards on QF website. The direct flight not available but coming from another destination the flight was available.

The problem with "you just don't turn up for the ongoing flight" is that as far as AA are concerned you are checked in with luggage JFK/BOS and they won't know you have no intention of travelling until 10-15 mins prior to departure when you're a fail to board passenger.

Theoretically they should be able to tell that your bag has not been loaded on to the plane as the baggage handlers would've scanned it while loading.

The absolute worse case scenario for the pax on the JFK/BOS flight would be a delay caused while AA looked for a bag they thought was loaded but wasn't because you had already left the airport with it.

Why not ask for the bag to be tagged to JFK only? Then no show the last leg as others have mentioned.

That would be the easiest option. I can't imagine CX would care if you asked to be checked in as far as JFK.
