Altitude Rewards for Amex and QFF for Mastercard

Has anyone tried this setup? I called amex to switch my Amex Altitude Black card to Altitude Rewards and asked whether I had to switch the mater card as well. Apparently they said I wasn't required. In that case, I went on the altitude website and realised that I needed a Mastercard to sign up for an account. Does anyone know how this works?
