Planning on flying Brisbane to Frankfurt on or around 7 May 2012 using points which I have in Amex/Westpac Altitude(yet to be transferred) My wife and I going for 25th wedding anniversary trip and have enough points to fly business. Was planning on flying Singapore Airlines but the Singapore/Frankfurt leg is waitlisted. Have posted a separate question regarding this in Singapore Airlines section.

Any suggestions to alternatives to SA? I have done a dummy booking on Malaysian Airlines and seats using points are available but the flight times do not suit as 18 hour stopover in KL.

Have joined Thai Airlines ff but can not do dummy booking without having points in the account. Also I do not know how many points would be required for Brisbane to Frankfurt one way in business for two.

Only other option I can think of is Cathay but am not a member of their ff scheme and do not know as to availability and points required.

Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thai airways is usually wide open in premium cabins... but on 6,7,8 may availability for two seats is limited.

Can get 2 seats 7 may no problems exBNE to BKK on the TG474 - dep 1400 arr 2020 - but nothing onwards from BKK. you'd need to connect next day...

On 8 may you can fly 2 seats in biz class BKK-FRA TG922 1245-1900.

The same flights also work a day earlier (that is, dep BNE on 6 May and connecting out of BKK for FRA on 7 May)

MEL_Traveller thanks for the response. Can you point me in the right direction on the Thai website for a points calculator to see how many points it would be?

Thanks for the link. I had a look and calculated that for a one way redemption for Royal Silk Class Brisbane to Franfurt was 118,000 points each. J Saver on SQ was 63,750 points each.

Have changed plans slightly for the trip and now booked on a J Saver Brisbane to Amsterdam on 6 May 2012.

Will sort out in next few days our trip back to Brisbane which will be about a month later. Will try and fly out of Copenhagen which both TG and SQ fly out o.

For the way home might be worth checking Thai - one or two of their scandinavian destinations (can't remember) is serviced by an old 747. If you fly business class you are seated in the First class cabin - which has fully horizontal flat beds (v old style!). (Business class seating at 42 inch pitch is sold as premium economy).
