Hi again,

*Sorry, not sure in where best to post this, so just went with Open Discussion*

I made a booking (many months back) using Alaska miles for QF flights PER-CNS, departing late July this year. Of course, I'm pondering a few things with this booking, and hoping the savvy minds here can offer some advice and opinions.

[I'm thinking there's a very high chance of not being able to make the trip, although seeing how well Aus is doing re CV19 numbers, maybe, just maybe, domestic travel will be opening up by late July. Who knows? - and I know there's numerous threads on this and similar, so not looking to delve into that here.]

1. If Alaska folds, and I then want to / have to cancel, am I just out of luck? As in, there's effectively nowhere for the points to be credited back to, so they just disappear?
2. What about if QF cancels the flights and Alaska has since folded? Is the situation any different?
3. Either way, any chance QF would credit points to my QFF account in the event Alaska is gone? I know even suggesting that sounds like the acme of foolishness, but I assume QF has already charged Alaska for the flights so... Or is there some other form of travel credit they could give me, non-dollar and non-point denominated? Like, sector based or something. Does such a thing even exist?

4. So I guess the underlying question is; does anyone have a view on the medium term viability of Alaska Airlines? I'm aware that it is a publicly listed company, but haven't really heard any news about them one way or another, and also haven't dived into ownership structure of the Mileage Plan.

As always, many thanks for any responses. Please let me know if any more info would help enable a better reply.

I skim read your post but a couple of thoughts. First, I have read absolutely nothing to suggest Alaska is one of the airlines in trouble. Save for some outrageous turn of events, I can't see that changing in the next two to three months. Second, Alaska currently has waived cancellation fees so you cancel and get your points back in full. Third and your third point, if you're ticket is booked with miles you won't be earning any FF points anyway so there's no reason QF would credit your Perth to Cairns flights to QFF.

Thanks Danger. Yes, likewise, I haven't heard anything about AS being in strife, but sometimes with these things by the time a Regular Joe like me hears about it, it's too late. Yep, also aware of the current waiver on cancellation fees, but thanks for posting that anyway. And finally, yes, I realise I should have phrased my #3 more clearly - I understand I will not accrue any points for the flights. What I meant was, as a hypothetical; should AS fold, and subsequent to that, QF cancel the flight, with nowhere to credit AS points back to, is there any chance QF would give me some sort of travel credit? I'm guessing not, but wanted to hear any other opinions.

Is Cathay Dragon considered part of Cathay Pacific? If so, is a CX-KA ticket acceptable?

i don't believe you can book KA flights through Mileageplan (very happy if that has changed in the last couple of months)
