Newbie Q: How's AS better than US? Wouldn't it cheaper to book the NA route using USDM?

I haven't checked the economics - maybe someone on this thread has already.

US doesn't allow one-way redemptions, for whatever it is worth. (Alright, they do, it's just that a return and one-way itinerary cost exactly the same).

Depends where you want to go.
From AUS to HKG return in J on CX will be 60k AS miles (~$1,300US with the current 35% promo) or 90k USDM miles (~$1,700US with the current 100% promo).

But with USDM you can 'share' :p

Hi everyone, I haven't used Alaska before but I'm wondering if it's possible to use it to fly hobart (or mel/Syd) to nz... Has anyone had any experience looking at that route?

Getting started with FF. I'm flying to JFK on QF in Y with an O class ticket. Do you guys recommend that I just redeem my miles with AS instead of QF with their better award scheme?

?? Your post doesn't make any sense. O class is a red e-deal discount economy revenue fare, not an award class ticket. When you talk about redeeming your miles with AS instead of QF, what do you mean? If you've got Qantas points you can only redeem them with Qantas. Similarly, Alaska miles can only be redeemed with Alaska (for Alaska flights or those of their partners, which includes Qantas). If you already have a revenue (i.e. paid) fare with Qantas, then you can only upgrade it using Qantas points, not Alaskan or any one else's points/miles.

Sorry, should of used claim instead of redeem. I meant claiming my miles with QF or AS. I believe with O I can still claim my miles with AS (at least thats what it shows on their website). I mean, I haven't flown with QF in awhile so I have no loyalty with them especially with the recent changes. So after I fly, should I claim my miles with AS or just stick with QFF?

The answer to that question lies in the value of the points you expect to get in each program.

I still don't seem to be able to buy miles, keep saying credit card declined, but I've contacted AMEX, and they say the transaction was approved so it was then declined by points.com

Weird....

Isn't the promo over though?

Points.com are telling me my credit card is not eligible and to use one for US funds only. Can someone here confirm a recent purchase with an Australian credit card?

Thanks

That's interesting. Non Nth American cards were blocked a few months ago ("fraud concerns"), but were re-allowed in May (see posts up-thread). Sounds like the shutters have come down again.

I contacted Alaska the other day, and they told me that Australian card purchases were allowed again, so it seems like Points.com are screwing up, but they are as thick as two short planks, and it takes them literally days to reply to any email...

I am still unable to buy points for Alaska, have tried 5 different credit cards all declined, all the card providers say they have approved the purchase but it is being declined by Points.com

This is really pissing me off now....

Can someone, anyone, who has made a recent purchase of points through Points.com for any airline points, please let me know which cards and what type of billing address they have used for the purchase. I am chasing my tail on this.

thanks

Don't confuse things. What you said made no sense and no-one really knew what you were talking about. It wasn't because you just couldn't buy points...
