Then royalties are used to pay out the advance. The writer can only get royalties if the advance is paid out.
If the book is a flop the publisher wears the cost.

I’m not so sure if he ever intended to make much cash from the book, or anything at all. Definitely is all about having the country talking about him again, and sending a message to would be boards that’s he is some sort of messiah, oh, and can someone please hire me again.

Can’t see too many prominent CEO vacancies available in the transport industry at the moment, seems like the type of person that wants a board to push someone out for him to come in. I still think some boards simply don’t want the attention he comes with. If he rolled up at my top ASX I’d probably start looking for another job as I know what his first move would be, slash slash slash.

The thought in executive management circles these days seems to be is if you’ve got C level executive experience or a generic management degree you can run any company, regardless on whether or not you’ve had any prior experience in that industry before.

Former Jetstar CEO Bruce Buchanan went on to lead an ecommerce company, Jayne Hrdlicka went from JQ to a milk company, then to VA and is now CEO of BWS/Dan Murphy’s. Olivia Wirth went from a senior QF executive to head Myer.

Perhaps potentially, as what he did wrong with qf was throw out the baby with the bathwater. So starting from scratch maybe.
Trouble is his toxic reputation, he'd have to change his name.

In terms of the theme of the thread, I think many boards have realised that the generic strategic thinker/generic-C person can't make the money for the company to survive. Given Qantas had to set aside $120 million to repair/reinvigorate customer support I can't imagine any future board members thinking Alan is the right hire for them.

But of the list of people you mentioned, Olivia demonstrated she has a retail brain in getting people to part with their money for a somewhat dubious product for Qantas FF, and has been able to show that at Myers. Good luck to her.

With his ego you sort of get the feeling that he only wants access to bigger jobs.

I thought he actually might have got the IATA job but that has gone to someone else. On the airline front the only vacancy at the moment is Air India. He has mentioned corporate life in his statements so perhaps leaning into non airline work.

Wherever he goes what is certain is he will want to make sure everyone knows where he works, and what his agenda is. I think that’s still a major issue for him, he just carries too much baggage for many boards to deal with. While the QF Board back in the day might have given him a free run to do and say whatever he pleases, many other boards don’t share that same view.

As a young Uni student a group of us used to do volunteer work for the NPWS. Tagging Koalas around Jenolan caves andwould find a koala Pulbah Island in Lake Macquarie. .
One trip to Pulbah Island stands out. Let just say I had enough to drink on Saturday that I was still inebriated Sunday. The NP ranger figured there were another 3 to find. No one would come with me dressed in bright red and green and crashing my way through the undergrowth. No one thought I wuould find a koala. But I was the only 1 that did including 7 untagged ones.
When they are surroundd they cry like a baby but if you get too close they fight.
