Hmm.

Most common for me is DFW.
Others include:
MIA (many times)
ORD (many times)
BNA
STL
RDU
KCI

I'm quite good at ensuring I visit cities that I pass through regularly. Sometimes difficult in the US though where the final destination is more important :)

DFW and NRT a few times the most recent but in the dim past, in the days of the "trans Asian Express" (who remembers that?) Tashkent and CPH. Oh, and BOM and Bahrein on the old Kangaroo route.

I loved this question, but then started to answer it :( I really should stopover more!!

I have been through SIN many times, but never left Changi.
Also transitted through Bangkok, Chicago O'Hare, JFK, Narita and Frankfurt but have never made it out of the airport. Many years ago i went through Bahrain and Bombay when the planes couldn't make it from SIN to LHR in one hop.

AUH x 2
AMM x 2
BKK x many times
SIN x many times, did go through immigration once but only to stay overnight at the Crowne

LAX is probably the only one on my list. Last time I was there I did venture about a block out from the main concourse looking for AT&T... But I gave up fairly quickly because my iPhone was of no use (Hence the desire to find an AT&T). Beyond my transit to layover/terminate ratio for SYD would have to be around 10:1. ABX is only a satellite airport, so SYD is on the way to everywhere for me.

ATL x 2
DOH x 2
IQQ
SCL (managed to get charged US$60 to walk from one end to the other!!!)
VIE and ZUR (tansited airport but had arrived and departed by train from actual cities before, so never saw actual airport)
ZAG
BWI
BSL
(In DFW once we hired a rental car and drove into the city for 6 hours during a transit and saw the Texas School Book Despository Museum, Grassy Knoll etc, interesting and worth it if ever there for just a few hours to get a sense of where it happened)

Dallas Love Field and Tulsa i didn't even get off the plane..

Most that I have transitted I have also stayed in.there are a few though where I haven't left the airport-
LIM
GYE
TOS
LAE
NOU-unscheduled refueling stop.
And a couple that dont seem to exist now-
Buka,Kieta.

LHR - I've always felt that the UK warranted a trip of its own (which I'm finally doing in April). Also PPT and IPC (when I was a child).

I try to explore the cities whose airports I use. So far there have been only two where I've stayed landside:

DFW (x2)
VVI (Santa Cruz, Bolivia)

Hmm totally lost track of amount of visits, however iirc syd, Perth , lax, dfw, Manila, Wellington, Chicago

I can proudly say, basically none. I plan my travel to get out and see places. Long transits allow for a trip into the city without resorting a stopover. I can't believe so many are missing out with the traditional Asian transits SIN, KUL, BKK, HKG etc.

The main exception for myself was a technical stop flying PTJ-HLT-MEB (country Vic.). I believe I have driven through the town once though.

.

Agreed.. I simply detest the types of monoculture styled global airports of today.
I also like to often stop over & explore the country & unique varying cultures, including at times heat & humidity, cold & iced roads.. even for a short time - 1 or 2 days.
It just seems to expand my horizons somewhat, & provides a refreshing time. :D

For me it's LAX (2) and SIN (2), not sure I am missing much in LAX so probably will jut keep passing through, unless someone tells me otherwise ...

And dxb too soon ...

The ones I miss in the us are usually due to the fare not allowing a stopover of more than x or overnight without a horrible reprice...

Definately agree that some people are missing out on a lot of great places.

While I have tried to return and actually visit most countries (transit AMM then visit Jordan via road) there are a few that are transit only - some staying on the plane. And of course there are a few that were visited only to get to the airport (SYZ ABQ)

VVI
LLW
DAR
KWI
HNL
BZE
SAL
SCL
DPS
ZRH
HEL
PNH
CTU

Happy code looking

Fred

With the hub and spoke network in many places, specially the US and even down in South America and Europe you often can't get from point A to point B without stopping at one or two places or it can certainly be the cheapest way, and for only for a few hours which make it impractical to attempt to see too much while taxis to and from can also quickly add up unless its something you really want to see... So you never really intended to see a place it just is required to get to where you really do want to go...

But yes DFW, ORD, LAX, some of the Asian hubs and many other places should be viewed at least once...

I generally seem to travel between second tier airports (for want of a better term) so I've managed to build up a list despite not really being that much of a frequent traveler. Cheaper fares for connecting also help!

My list, from memory is:
SYD
IST
ICN
CPH
CDG
CLT
LAX
AKL
FRA
YYZ

I've already been to Sydney (by road) so that only partially counts, perhaps. Everywhere else I'd like to go see at least once, although Charlotte is pretty low on the priorities list. Might try ICN first if I can get a free couple of days from work.
