Hi all,

I don’t fly much but I’m flying out tomorrow afternoon from Sydney to Hong kong(Cathay), i have been trying to checkin online since yesterday afternoon but without any success, basically there’s no where inside my manage flight page from the website allows me to do so.
I also tried this morning just moments ago and it is still the same, I called Cathay on the phone , I don’t understand completely what they said to me but I heard something about “airport control” I need to be at the airport for checkin 3hrs early before the flight.

Could someone explain to me what’s “airport control”? And why It doesn’t allow me to checkin online?

I imagine that you can’t checkin online because you need to provide vaccination details or similar.

But I thought that’s where I provide the details by Checking in online? Where else can I provide my vaccination record before checking in ?

From my experience, the requirement is for an airline staff to sight your vax details - International vax certificate & any other entry requirements for the destination country.

I’ve never been able to check in online with CX since covid was a thing. They’ll want to physically scrutinise your doco, including your vaccination record etc, before checking you in. In the bad old days there was a desk before the checkin counter where this was done.

“Airport control” just means there are restrictions on what can be done by PAX or airline staff who are not at check in.

The funny thing is , I checkin online for my parents to go back last month to the same country that I’m flying tomorrow and it was fine. I also have a friend just fly back 5 days ago with no problems checking in online, I just want to found out if it is something that I’ve done to cause this.

Ooh.. so I’m not alone. but this just cause more hassle for me, entering Hong Kong nowadays is a nightmare, the things I’ve organise for my parents to go back. The only problem I have now is the health declaration form which I can’t submit without a flight seat number.

I have no idea about that, I just checked .. it’s over 3000 cases in NSW today.

I was finally able to checkin yesterday late afternoon, but wasn’t able to pick a seat , a random seat was selected at the end of checkin.

I hate it when I'm unable to select (any) a seat I want ... guess once the flight goes into airport control one can't select/change seats. Hope that you will be able to secure the seat you are after at the airport on the day of travel

I went to the airport 4hrs early, can’t change the seat anymore , the flight was full today.

CX SYD-HKG flights seem to be completely sold out in Y until 22 Dec, so it looks like online check-in is turned off when this is the case?

For this route syd-hkg I don’t think it ever happened before, Cathay short staffed shouldn’t affect online check in.
