Airlines, please turn off the main lights on night flights

medhead, what you ought have written is 'some passengers on night trains are in their own cabins' because others sit up all night on seats (although sleeping is possible, especially if one has what airline passengers call a 'shadow.')

Analogies do not prove anything, but they do give examples of how (in this case) two other modes better facilitate sleep (and I'm comparing sitting passengers on trains and coaches with Y economy class air passengers.)

The strongest argument is that if SQ can do it, why can't other airlines on Oz - southeast Asia - Oz night or late evening flights?

I'm yet to see any european night train like that. It is also worthwhile remembering that night trains will take upto 10 hours for their trip, even if that means sitting still for extended time. I fail to see the comparison when they don't do a meal service on the train anyway. Pax getting up and staggering around is not the same as staff working at multiple tasks.

That is just a three hour flight though? Leaving at 6pm for all cities. I wouldn't want the lights out for that.

My response was a bit tongue in cheek - in reference to the eye shades and ear plugs.

I was expecting them to dim the lights a bit though. IMO that would have been preferable to full on.

Surely this only happens in whY? I can't remember being in an F or J cabin with the lights left on overnight.

I was recently on QF3 departing SYD at 10.25pm. On this flight they offered a full meal service and the lights didn't go out until 1.30am SYD time. I would have thought a light snack (if anything) or hot chocolate would have been more appropriate to serve at this time of night and enable the lights to be turned off earlier.
