Airlines fly into new year with wave of fare sales.

ATLANTA — A wave of fare sales has spread across the airline industry in the early days of the new year as the weak economy continues to put pressure on carriers to fill seats even after they drastically reduced capacity and some expressed willingness to cut more.

That's terriffic Bill, but I'm not really seeing it at the pointy (paying) end.

It's mainly hype, I feel.

Actually, it's not really hype, even at the pointy end. Loadings seems to indicate many more upgrades are clearing these days when compare to last year.

Also, there is far more D and even I availability around ...

Hopefully this means some cheaper biz class fares then? Do you mean on Qantas or does this refer to other airlines as well? I've used the I class Qantas fares to Europe before but can't seem to find them again (looking to book a flight in May) - any suggestions on best place to find these 'cheap' fares? Alternatively, does anyone know of any good oneworld fares to Europe at that time of year?

Article on ABC radio this morning with an "industry analyst" and editor (i think) commenting that the price wars are expected to start on 1 Feb.

Forward bookings are soft.

Airlines likely to be doing 2-for-1 deals.

Airlines considering incentive fares to keep people talking about travel.

-----------
I'm considering a European booking and was getting more interested with the delas appearing on Bestflights...can't wait until Feb
