Can anyone tell me if there is a sophisticated tool available to check aircraft seating configurations.

Looking via the Qantas website at QF598 (Pth -Bne) on Sunday 16/10 it simply shows 767-300. When you click on the view seating plan link it comes up with 4 different configurations (2 of which are 1-2-2 in business).

Any assistance/guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

The only way I know is to use one of the on-line booking tools and make a dummy booking in the class for which you wish to see the seating map.

I use the KVS Availability tool for this and it allows the dummy booking under a swag of different booking engines.

With domestic QF flights, the only way is when you find out the aircraft's registration or get a seat map with Quick Check.

Last Sunday, QF598 was flown by VH-ZXE, today VH-OGD & tomorrow VH-OGE.

The ZX's are shockers, with no directional air vents. OG(D/E/F) have recently been converted from the "Trans-Tasman Configuration"

All these have the "millenium" business class seats.

Any other Qantas 763 has "Dreamtime" busienss seats.

Thank you for the information. I'll just have to wait and see what the QF gods serve up.

It astounds me the level of difference in the cabin setups - some 767's (business) having all the fruit - eg personal entertainment screens etc :D and some (as serfty said) are basically just a big barn with not even directional air vents

The ones with personal entertainment screens and a 1-2-2 layout are those configured for international service though sometimes serve domestic routes

For domestic operations there are 2 main types, those with pop out overwing exits at rows 34 and 35 or those with a full door exit at row 43. The latter I believe were obtained from BA. I prefer these since I like the space when sitting at an exit. Neither of these have personal videos and are configured in a 2-2-2 layout in J

The first (with the over-wing exits) are 767-338 originally delievred to Qantas and with regos VH-OG*. The ones with the large exit door at row 43 are 767-336 originally delivered to BA and now leased to QF with regos VH-ZX*.

I really don't care which I get for a domestic flight since on most domestic flights I am in economy and typically short flights. Double the chance for an exit row on the -338's, but more space at exit row on -336. For a 1 hour flight, all I want is an aisle seat. Might take a different view for a red-eye from Perth  .

Being fairly tall I do care even on short hops. The 338s may have 2 exit rows, but the row 34 exit is pretty cramped due to a bulkhead location so, for me, I view each type as having once exit row with the ex BA ones taking the biscuit

Ahh, the benefits of being altitudinally challenged :D

I will take any QF 767 over a 737 in economy.

I'd agree there but I would take a Crash 8 over a 767

Not to Perth from the East Coast  . Not sure how many routes give the choice of 767 or DHC8 :p .

Booked some award flights last night for the family and ended up choosing 73H for them on the return PER-SYD-BNE since the only options for business class were red-eyes via CBR, CNS or MEL and there was a distinct preference for day flights. So for about the same points as 2 x J awards non-stop PER-BNE, I booked 3 x Y awards PER-SYD-BNE all on 73H. That way they should get 3 seats together for Mrs NM + 11 year-old Master NM + 1 yo baby NM. None is in need of the extra legroom.

They are not going to get exit rows with the Minis, so in that case the schedule became the driving force rather than the aircraft type. In fact, she could not understand why I keep mentioning the aircraft type when discussing the options - all she was interested in was the departure and arrival times and the duration of the connection :p . Oh to be so unaware of the finer points of the travel experience :D .

Outbound is BNE-ADL-PER in J, again on 73H, but only two seats. Of course, by booking three seats for the return, I had to pay 3 x taxes/charges for the multi-segment routing. But for $400 she gets a week with her sister and takes Master NM and bub with her, so not bad value. And she actually gets to exercise her shiny new Gold FF card for lounge access in BNE, ADL, PER and SYD.

I will keep watching for U becoming available on the non-stop daytime service, and am willing to eat the 5000 points cost to cancel and rebook if necessary. Another advantage of making the reservation as two one-way itineraries (which was needed to book 2 x J outbound and 3 x Y inbound anyway). The saving in taxes/charges will offset the 2000 points it will cost. But the non-stops seem to have changed from A332 last year to 73H now - same seats in J, but no bassinet for bub to sleep on the 73H.

Always a nice surprise to get a/c change to intl config.
