But are they serious? Or have I been punked?
They're serious juddles. Ryanair has ordered 50 aircraft already. Okay I made that bit up, but I can imagine this being something Ryanair and other ultra low cost carriers will consider seriously.

Meantime, *actual* exercise bikes or treadmills should be introduced for long haul (12+ hours) flights immediately.

Yeah...take out the bar area on the 380's and put in half a dozen walking machines, yeah that's better than a quiet beer or two

Whilst I would never want this idea to be developed, I really really wish that they would change patent laws so that you can only patent an idea if you or your company have every intention of making a commercial product with that idea, and make it so patents can not be sold, individual inventors can license companies whom can develop the idea into a saleable item. It would stop patent trolls in their tracks since patent trolls have no ability to come up with an original idea or actually develop the patent into a marketable product, plus if patents can only be sold once it makes the market for them non existent.

This notion of issuing patents for ideas and inventions which will never be built, but the patent exists to prevent others from building the idea just annoys me big time. Of course this won't happen since most patent offices are for profit, and they make their profit by issuing every patent under the sun, original idea or not.

Interesting take - that Airbus are doing it to prevent competition from such product. Hmmmmm......

I forget the exact name for it, but there are many patents out there where the company which owns them simply want to prevent their competition from using the idea, they themselves have no interest in developing it into a marketable product.

" ... Shame about needing to go to the toilet.... "
However, in cycling-race style, use of the toilet (for a #1) would not occur. It may be done while in the seat.

I had this conversation with a mate years ago when we got stuck in a crappy seat near the toilets on a long haul and had the walkers annoying us all night.
I suggested they put in a treadmill for those who cant sit still for 2 minutes at a time and hook it up to the charge some batteries or something.
Mate said yes but then people wouldn't use it on principal as they think Qantas would get something (1/2 volt of power) for free...he's probably right.

Geepers, why don't they makes us all wear five point safety harnesses and hook us into the over head cabin bins!

This way they can take out all the seating infrastructure!!!

Strange how the drawings didn't include the pedals. The idea is that the more you pedal, the less the ticket will cost.

The pedals are an optional extra, however if you do select the pedal option airbus does recommend that the airline also hires a guy with a whip in place of FA's to walk up and down the aisle to "motivate" the pax into actually pedaling since the pedals are directly driving the engines...

No, no you've got the details wrong.

"For a small surcharge, you can pay to be the person (equal opportunity of course) wielding the whip, with four classes of whip available for the flight: economy, premium economy, business and the first class whip.

Note:

(1) No status credits are earned upgrading the whip through the redemption of FF points although intense satisfaction may be available.
(2) Codeshare whips are not permissible unless surcharges and taxes are paid.
(3) Availability of position per flight is subject to change and WP1 will have priority.
(4) Further enhancements will be released in a new strategic initiative in due course."
