There's conflicting reports. Egyptian officials are saying that the A321 has crashed in Egypt while Turkish officials are saying that the aircraft has made contact with them.

ABC News24 have just started reporting the news in the last minute.

Apparently it descended to 5000ft before FR24 lost it.

Reports say voices could be heard from part of the wreckage. Hope there will be some survivors.

BBC is reporting as below:

A Russian airliner has crashed in central Sinai with more than 200 people on board, the office of Egypt's prime minister has confirmed.

The Airbus A-321 had just left the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, bound for the Russian city of St Petersburg.

Wreckage was found in the Hasana area and bodies removed, along with the plane's "black box". An official described a "tragic scene".

Looks like no survivors.

Re: An Airbus A321 missing in Egypt (~200 on board)

Apparently a mayday was not heard by any ATC.
IS claiming they shot it down.
Egypt says not true but did say plane was descending at 6000f/m when radar contact lost.

Orange boxes retrieved.

Some airlines rerouting

Means nothing.

IS claiming they shot it down.

Means less than nothing.

Egypt says not true but did say plane was descending at 6000f/m when radar contact lost.

Which is not an outlandish number, and is seen occasionally on even normal descents.

friend going to Sharm El Sheikh with family for holiday in 2 weeks. He has no plans to change.

JB747 do you remember when QF last visited CAI?

Different world in those days.

The pictures coming our are interesting (as I guess they mostly are). Apparently there is some mixing of accidents going on too.

The things that strike me in two images that are readily identifiable are that the tail section has landed with a mostly vertical motion. The coughpit section seems to have done the same, but it's also inverted.

Suggestions are that some pax were still strapped to their seats. If true suggests that the aircraft did not disintegrate mid air. However pure speculation until Orange Boxes analysed.

JB747 do you have any theory in mind based on the pictures?

It was probably someone's ring-tone on their phone. This was apparently a high-velocity impact, not what you'd describe as a crash-landing.

Being strapped to their seats means nothing as far as disintegration is concerned. The boxes will be interesting as always, but I expect that the engineering analysis of the wreckage will be more telling.

No, not really. Even Richard Quest got it right when he said that an accident from the cruise is unusual. Weather was apparently good, so the Air France and Air Asia issues probably weren't the major players (though, that doesn't rule them out).

As aircraft accidents go, it actually looks like a relatively low speed event, with the motion being mostly in the vertical. In that sense at least, it's like AF447. An overall look at the debris field would tell a lot.
