How is it competition when they don't fly the same routes?
Well, they are an LCC.

People who fly LCCs typically do not have a destination​ in mind, they have a holiday in mind. So JQ destinations may feel some impact if D7 are able to steal leisure traffic away. It's market competition more than it is direct route competition.

How is it competition when they don't fly the same routes?

As Must...Fly! said they are a direct LCC competitor with JQ. Being able to fly direct to the Air Asia LCCT hub will open up the number of cheap getaways Sydney-siders will now be able to book. Some of their better sales will make a cheap weekend in coughet or Langkawi very doable ex SYD!

The arrival of both Air Asia X and Singapore's Scoot mid-year will really shake things up at good old Kingsford Smith.

I'm not especially excited. The sole LCC flight I took with them turned me off flying LCC forever. Happy to pay the extra for full service thanks. But I'm sure its wonderful for people fascinated with all things cheap. Personally I dont get the 'cheap' hype. Everytime I've bought cheap I've regretted it.

What didn't you like? I haven't flown AirAsia before although I find the long haul Jetstar flight quite enjoyable, especially with the leather seats.

I've only flown them shorthaul within Asia. What I didnt like.....

The aircraft cabins that remind me of a $2 shop with black and ferrari red interiors plastered with advertising.
The tacky check-in, boarding and inflight experience. Mostly the people working there acting like they had better things to do than their jobs. The fact the check-in desk was held together with sticky tape.
The seat pitch which made me feel cramped even though I had an entire row to myself.
A late night flight where the cabin lights were left on bright the entire time.

It took just 90mins to decide the LCC experience was something I will never try again. I flew a full service airline back the other way and forfeited my return fare and the experience was much, much better.

I'm in a similar mindset.
Did JQ, SYD-HKT. Y one way, StarClass return. The outbound Y reminded me why l should have just forked out a little bit more $ and flew with Thai/SQ. By the time you add on all the extras (food/drink/AVOD), you may swell fly a full service carrier and be happy. StarClass is more like Y+ IME and full of CUB's. However, for short hops (intra-Europe), l have used some LCC's (Ryanair/SkyEurope/EasyJet) and didn't mind the experience.
 
How is it competition when they don't fly the same routes?

How do you work that one out, both fly to Vietnam for example, Bali and I think Thailand. Many flyers are not going to care much that they are routed via KL rather than Darwin or Singapor if they get the flight a few hundred dolars cheaper.
