AirAsia scraps fuel surcharge on flights - Breaking News - Business - Breaking News

Malaysian budget carrier AirAsia has scrapped fuel surcharges on all its flights including on long-haul carrier AirAsia X, in response to the decline in global oil prices.
AirAsia chief executive officer Tony Fernandes said the regional carrier's fares will remain unchanged.
"We want to get rid of all surcharges and we have been able to... be the first airline in the world that is completely getting rid of fuel surcharges," he told reporters.
AirAsia X opened a Perth-KL route on November 2 this year, to be followed shortly by Melbourne.
These two routes have been added on the back of the success of the Gold Coast route that opened in November last year.
AirAsia passengers pay an average fuel surcharge of 47 ringgit ($A19) on each sector.
The carrier said passengers will still have to pay other taxes - a 22.50 ringgit administration and insurance charge and airport tax of six ringgit for domestic flights and 25 ringgit on international routes.
It is also offering 500,000 free seats, with no fare or fuel surcharge, in a five-day campaign beginning midnight Wednesday (0300 AEDT Thursday) for flights in the third quarter of 2009.

For those London Bound people, might be wise to get a MEL(or Perth,Goldy) to KUL $0+tax fare and but the STN fare when they come out sometime next week.

They are advertising this on their website now (PER-KUL $13) but there seems to be zero availability. According to the press release these seats shouldn't be on sale until tonight.

Well done Air Asia for removing fuel surcharges. Now if only the rest of the airlines followed suit.

What gives with the free flight offer? What routes does it cover? I have looked at a few random dates in August 2009 but no luck....
