Air Vanuatu has earmarked early February as its re-launch date for Melbourne flights should the plan get the nod from the carrier’s board.

Senior executives said plans were “firming up” for the airline to reintroduce the Victorian state capital as an extension to Sydney-Port Vila’s Thursday service.

The timing is designed to tie in with the arrival of Air Vanuatu’s new A737-800 which is currently on the production line at Boeing’s Seattle headquarters.

The plan, announced by acting general manager sales and marketing Ted Drew at Vanuatu’s trade fair TOK TOK, was warmly greeted by hoteliers and wholesalers.

The 737-800 will see Air Vanuatu’s weekly capacity from Australia and New Zealand soar by 35 per cent from February. The current 737-300 has 124 seats and the 800 series 170. “There will be 484 more seats per week, the equivalent of almost four more 737-300s,” Drew said.
