Air New Zealand and Qantas have admitted to Australia's competition watchdog that they will effectively operate as a joint business on the Tasman if their proposed code share agreement is allowed, the New Zealand Herald reported.

Opponents of the deal, including Wellington International Airport, argue it goes far beyond normal code arrangements and is more like a cartel or merger.

It will be interesting to see if the ACCC approves this arrangement.

Supposedly ACCC report is out in less than 2 weeks. NZ Ministry of Transport is waiting on that before issuing their approval or otherwise.

historically the ACCC or similar bodies in NZ have knocked these moves on the head. they seem to come up with regularity

Last time it came up ACCC backed (eventually) a full merger - much more than just a trans-tasman codeshare/profitshare arrangement. It was NZ commerce commission that killed the last attempt. This time NZ & QF have structured it to avoid the NZ commerce commission - it will be Ministry of Transport to approve or otherwise.

Indeed. I am sure they will just keep restructuring the proposal until it gets approval.
