Air New Zealand cabin crew have officially set a strike date after months of unsuccessful negotiations over pay, fatigue, and working conditions. The 24-hour walkout is scheduled for December 8, 2025, and will affect international, domestic, and regional flights.
More than 1,200 crew members represented by E tū and the Flight Attendants’ Association of New Zealand will participate after rejecting the airline’s latest offer. Union leaders say the proposal does not reflect the workload, responsibilities, or safety demands of the role.
Regional services will be disrupted from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. on December 8. Domestic and international crews will strike from 12:01 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. the same day.

I agree they need fair pay for fair work, reflecting their safety role.

Digging deeper into the union’s claims, Michael Wood, Et Director says:

… Air NZ cabin crew are shift workers, with rosters that change every month, unsociable hours, long periods away from their families, and frequent standby requirements that disrupt ordinary life.​

The long periods away from families, unsociable hours, and ‘standby disrupting ordinary life’ are all clearly explained before someone takes the job. I don’t think those are reasons on their own for a pay rise.

I’m not sure the union is going to get much sympathy from the public based on those reasons?

(That being said, provision absolutely needs to be made for parents and primary careers to elect rosters which are family friendly, if that’s what they need.)
