We are spending a week at the Hilton in Denerau to escape the NZ winter. We booked our flights in January. At the time economy fares were about $850 each way but surprisingly business class was only $650. We snapped them up and smiled a few days later when the same business class fares jumped back to the usual $1,250 each way.

Lots has been said about the Air NZ herringbone seating. I didn’t like it. Next to no storage, you have to turn nearly 180 degrees to look out the window, the small drinks shelf is actually behind you and there is very little privacy. I booked the ‘A’ seats so we didn’t have look at the middle seats.

Compared to other airlines, I thought the screen was quite small as well.

While the hard product is quite dated now, the soft product made up for it as well as the very professional crew.

Champagne and menus were provided on boarding. Our departure time was 9.45 am but we had a lunch menu. I was expecting breakfast.

Service started with an amuse-bouche of Horopito beef tenderloin with smoked kumara purée and pickled daikon. This was a tasty start.

Next up was the pumpkin hummus with roasted artichokes, feta and almond dukkah. Another tasty dish, well presented but a bit of a small portion. It came with a small pretzel roll.
