I am potentially going to have to go Air North DRW-KNX-BME soon, as part of SYD>DRW>KNX>BME>PER>SYD and I was wondering what their carry-on policy is aboard the E170, this from their website:
Aircraft | Check in baggage | Hand baggage

E170 Jet | 20kg unless connecting to a smaller aircraft | 9kg - maximum dimension of 400mm x 610mm x 250mm

I assume this means a computer bag is "ok" as carry on, but an additional roller bag will need to go under? No indication on Number of pieces? and no indication of any extra allowances for QF status on a QF codeshare flight etc..Can the bags be checked all the way through from KNX to SYD if need be?

Not that I'm expecting a major delay in baggage handling at KNX or BME!

Anyone? KNX mustn't be that popular a place to go to...

It's been about 6 years since I did that flight segment... and I didn't connect to SYD! From memory my bag was connected thru to PER via BME (QF BME-PER, although I heard rumours AirNorth were starting a KNX-PER direct service?) so SYD shouldn't be too much of a problem. I think weight, not pieces was paramount but I don't think QF extra allowances counted on AirNorth. (was NB at the time... in fact I joined to get points from the University-funded flights to/from KNX)

Note also the AirNorth inflight service consisted of a selection of standard-size crisps and chocolate bars - so don't bother paying the $4 BME or DRW airport stores are asking for those snacks as you'll get those in-flight. (Disclaimer: things may have changed in 6 years, but my broke-student bitterness at being ripped off in BME whilst in transit still hurts! :D )

Do you spend any time in KNX itself? I love Kununurra, and the approach into the airport is great - green oasis of the Ord River Project amid the orangey reds of the Bungles and surrounds...

Thanks drmikki,

KNX - PER does exist, on weekends only. I'd be surprised if QF status meant for anything with Air North, but if I have to check baggage in I hope to be able to retrieve it either at BME or at PER to be able to carry it on board for the last flight and be able to get off the plane ASAP. I'll be in KNX for a few days but like most trips I'm sure i'll get to enjoy the insides of the office and hotel room walls more than anything else..

I'll make sure to keep my eyes out the window, never flown up that way before so it'll all be a good view for me.

A few years back I did a Darwin to Bali flight with Air North, it was my last flight with them! They even weighed my hand luggage to ensure it was within the (at the time 4 kg) weight allowance. I had a laptop trolley case and my handbag. I was then informed that I was only allowed one piece of hand luggage. Even my handbag was taken into account when determining the weight of the hand luggage. Lucky the person that dropped me off at the airport was still there so I could offload my gear. I have never been so scrutinised by an airline before in regards to weight for check-in and hand luggage. I could really use the service between Townsville & Darwin they have just started but I still prefer to go through Cairns due to the stringent weight restrictions Air North have applied to me in the past . I did email Air North when the new service started, and they do reply, so it may be worth using the email address on their website to ascertain exactly what your allowance is before you fly.

I think such weight issues will always surface on the small turboprops, different for ejets!

I have flown Air North several times recently and will be flying again with them tomorrow. I haven't had to test their carry on allowance yet, although tomorrow will be taking laptop and handbag and don't think there will be an issue. I will definitely take note of the size of carry on baggage tomorrow and ask at the desk and let you know.
Also I have been pleasantly surprised by the in flight meals and how on time they are.
