This week I headed to Port Morseby. I had never flown to PNG before and thus was a first timer on Air Niugini (PX).

For what I assumed would be a very '3rd world' airline, it was generally very good and was far beyond my expectations to be quite honest. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but if you imagine the Indiana Jones movie where they fly in the plane with the chickens....yeah.

My trip was quite simple - MEL-BNE-POM-BNE-MEL

I traveled in Y on the BNE-POM sector due to being wait listed for J but I did manage to get the J seat on the way back to Brisbane which was appreciated.

On both PX flights I managed to get on Air Niugini's new flagship 767-300ER from Icelandair. It has quite an old and tired interior compared to the newer seats and fabrics on a QF 767 for example, however it's quite pleasant for what my expectations were and I would say has possibly more legroom than many QF planes in Y, though that may just have been an illusion.

The J seat was actually very good, again it's no Skybed, but the recline is very very generous and enough legroom to only just be able to reach the seat pocket in front (and I have quite long arms!). They are obviously old seats and well worn, but they still do the trick. Thumbs up for a small airline.

The Y food was...on par with QF meals, edible but nothing great, probably because they come out of the same factory as QF. The J food was 'average' but again, certainly nothing to write home about. But you could certainly see a big difference in quality in the J food over the Y food which is half the reason for the extra cost of the seat.

On the way home however we were 1 hour late leaving due to the rear cargo door not closing, which meant we arrived an hour late in to Brisbane. This meant I missed my connection to MEL and the rest of the fights that night were literally full. Upon arrival in Brisbane a QF rep was waiting in the skybridge with my hotel details, taxi vouchers and rebooking on a flight the next morning. Annoying but good service. It was a pain to have to stay over night in Brisbane, but it was at the cost of Air Niugini so it wasn't so bad. Plus I got to wander around brisvegas on a Friday night woohoo! They rebooked me on the 6:50am to MEL but I change it to 9:50 so I could sleep in :D I eventually made it home :)

Anyway, thumbs up to Air Niugini in general. For a small airline with limited resources, they do a good job. The hostesses quite clearly take a LOT of pride in their jobs, which always helps make the flight more enjoyable.

Also a hot tip for anyone planning to go to PNG sometime, try to get a Visa before you go. Getting on one arrival will take you at least an hour standing in line :( (Or be first in line!)

Great trip report Harpoon - short and sweet. Any comments on the airport at POM? I've no plans to go there, but you never know...

Thanks. I realise it was short but really only posted for the review of Air Niugini. Because I'm never a huge fan of the smaller airlines myself, particularly safety wise, but also comfort wise as well. So thought it'd be good to share.

Airport at POM, well yes I do have some comments, and others who've been there as well more times than me can probably comment further.

The immigration system is very primitive. 1 line for residents. 1 line for non residents WITH a visa and 1 for non residents WITHOUT a visa. That literally means one officer handling each line. So 3 immigration officials...total. When you factor in a fully loaded 767 or 757.... you better run from the air bridge to immigration to save yourself 30-60 mins in the queue. And let me tell you, the officials there are in no hurry at all. Very painful unless your in J and can line up first. Business travelers also need 500Kina in cash to get a business visa as well as justification from employer etc. This holds up the line even more, as every second person in front of me seemed to have absolutely no idea this is the requirement. So the officer let the people without cash, go through to the cash machine in the airport, then come back in to the line to pay. Laughable by Australian standards hehe. A shemozzle but it works out in the end.

Anyway, more about the airport... theres a couple of souvenir shops and an ATM or two, as well as a few car hire vendors for the arrivals hall. But not a whole lot to look at. Oh there is a choir/band that play for arrivals which is actually a nice touch.

For departures theres dedicated Qantas lines with Business, QC and Y each having separate ques. Air Niugini also has an array of lines for check in. J or QC pax can use the Air Niugini Exec Club line. theres an Air Niugini Exec Members Club (or something) departure lounge which their exec members obviously, QC/OW status and J-pax have access to. It seats about 40 or so I'd guess, with drinks and a few sandwiches/nuts etc on offer. For the size of the airport and amount of flights per day(not that many), I'd say it's pretty good, oh and it has comfy seats!

The other important point traveling to and from the airport and between terminals....you don't get the impression that it's entirely safe as soon as you set foot outside the door of the Intl terminal unless you are in a group or have an escort as a solo traveler. There are lots of security guards simply on the terminal doors to seemingly keep the locals out, which on one hand is sad, but quite necessary it seems. The domestic terminal is about 100m down the pavement. If you have a domestic connection, see if you can organize an security escort of some sort from intl to domestic, unless you're completely fearless.

Harpoon, I have colleagues who have waited over 3 months for visas (work) for PNG. They simply enter the country as tourists and have to fly back every so often.
Apparently government service in PNG is fast collapsing. I'm not sure when it will finally melt down, but it can't be that far off.

I fly Air Niugini every 4 weeks to & from work in PNG. I agree completely with your summary above. The visa system is a debarcle over here. I initially waited for a full five months to get a working visa. Everything is done on PNG time- takes much longer than expected.

Now that I have the visa, I always go in the much shorter "residents/ domestic transfers" queue although I am staying in POM... I have never been queried on this.

The change to the Icelandair plane has only been recent. They had been using VivaMacau and I have seen OneWorld do the route for them too. The daily Cairns flight on the Focker100 is not as pleasant- smaller seats and not as much service as the larger plane.

Do you get QFF points/status credits when flying with Air Nuigini?

100% points for most booking classes (or 125% for J) but no SC's.
Code:
Air Niugini (PX) BEHKLMSTVWY Economy 1 -
                   JD Business 1 25%

Excluded: points are not earned on domestic
or codeshare flights operated by an airline
                   other than Qantas.

My flights are booked under the Qantas flight number (codeshare) so I get points and SC. As serfty has said, if you just use PX flight number, you only get points.

Just make sure to book under the QF codeshare number to get the SCs :)
