AFR rumour [confirmed] - SQ to launch SIN-CBR-WLG

MTOW is irrelevant. It's rare (in most operations) to take off at that weight. It only comes up in long haul, and Wellington to Canberra isn't that.

The limitations that will affect operations are the performance limited take off weight (which varies for every take off, and the most minor changes in the conditions), and the landing weight. They may actually be able to land at the max landing weight, though that will also vary with the conditions.

On a short runway like this, having acceptable length is not a given. It's often a very windy place, which reduces the ground speed dramatically, but can also serve to destabilise an approach. From my time operating there, the most interesting days where associated with light downwind at both ends of the runway, and wet. It's not a place to float, and auto landings are not available.

From what I can gather, they will be operating the largest aircraft...everyone else uses 737 and 320.

The legal requirement is for an excess of 67% in dry conditions, and even more in the wet.

Here are some 777-300 landings at Wellington.. and what you could only describe as a blast off.

The last two (take offs) are neither here nor there....light weight, tons of performance.

The landing is interesting though. ANZ would be my pick of the bunch to fly there with, simply because you'd expect all of their pilots to be well experienced with the place. The conditions are pretty benign. Nevertheless, the touchdown is short, at about the 700 foot mark.

Yeap, he obviously know little about the link between Australia and New Zealand, but he'll be damned if anyone tell him something other than the dribble which he wrote.
Being from Canberra, I know that there a many people (whom actually fly and are not just armchair travelers) whom are quite excited about this new route, and whom now have plans to travel on it.
Will it go past it's honeymoon period where people chose to fly on the route because of the novelty? Remains to be seen.

Yes there was a previous CBR-NAN route which failed, but as nice as Fiji is (or so I've been led to believe, never been there myself), it's not exactly a route that people are scrambling to get on. IMHO CBR-WLG, CBR-SIN and WLG-SIN on the other hand are a different story.

And of course CBR-NAN has very very little in way of onwards connections, and very little in way of population to bring to CBR from Fiji/SW Pacific. Maybe LAX & HNL and handful of pacific islands. On the other hand CBR-SIN .. well China, Thailand, Indonesia, India, Malaysia, Philippines, Japan, Korea, Taiwan ... places that people want to go to and act as a source of passengers to CBR as well.

Let's not forget about the international students @ the ANU and UC. The SQ flight is definitely a win for these guys.

ANU has over 5000 international students and UC just shy of 4000.

Success will totally depend on pricing and what sort of premium they charge compared to connecting in SYD or MEL to onward international flights.

It will be interesting to see what kind of prices/connection times are offered for those travelling to AKL (i.e. CBR-xWLG-AKL). It's still one stop, but if SQ are competitive this could be far more attractive than transiting through SYD or MEL from CBR.

A wise move kicking this off towards the end of (or after?) the fickle fog months. If it survives, I suspect a few cooler month arrivals will touch down in SYD first.

Slightly OT, but I just happened to be in WLG last weekend when it was closed for the night due to a pea soup fog that rolled in around 4pm!

There's 3 ANZ flights to AKL from 5:05pm to 6:10pm
