Have 5 days spare in Boston USA and would like short excursion nearby.

Have looked at a Cruise to Canada but unavailable with my dates 30 April to 5 May 2013.

Any suggestions?

How far is too far? You could easily get the Amtrak to NYC and explore for a few days. I'm sure there would be overnight trips to Niagara Falls leaving from Boston. Wit 5 days you could pretty much go anywhere in the USA quite easily.

Amtrak to NYC is great. Even if you don't use the express train make sure you book in Business Class. It's a great way to travel between the east coast cities. Not bad time-wise either as you end up in the middle of the city, thus avoiding the airport-city commute.

You could catch the express train down and back to DC and spend a few days visiting the various museums of the Smithsonian.

Boston and surrounds are lovely to spend a few days.

Go have a Samuel Adams beer at the cafe that looks across to Samuel Adams grave!
Salem isn't really that great, pretty boring actually but doing a boat trip up to one of the othe coastal towns is a good experience.
Instead of just NYC, catch the train into Maine and go exploring there.
