Hi there folks,

Last Wednesday night, my wife and I were surprised to discover an 8 hour delay for our Singapore to Paris flight, on arriving in Changi from Melboune. It had already been a tough leg what with our 5 month old twins often in full cry!

Although SQ did put us up in a hotel and covered the transfers, our relatives are suggesting we seek compensation. Could anyone point us in the right direction? I noted Cruiser's remark about recent and persistent A380 delays... what's going on with SQ?

Cheers

What compensation do you want? And why? Sounds like your expenses were covered and you were put up in a hotel room.

Did you incur any expenses because of the delay?

If it were Paris to Singapore all 4 of you would likely have been eligible for EUR600 each through EU regulation. This would have been in addition to duty of care (accomodation, food, etc.).

However since 1) SQ is not an EU carrier and 2) travel was not from an EU port then the regulation does not apply.

Eu261 compensation of EUR600 per person, so long as the delay was not caused by an excluded event.

Some KF miles would be nice!

Personally, because it was not a business trip I didn't think I would have any basis for a claim, in terms of time lost eg. However I thought I would put it to the experts to see what you think. Thanks for responding Hvr - point taken.

I wonder if the other passengers on that flight are seeking compensation for having to put up with the discomfort of having 2 screaming kids for ~8 hours.

What is the point for buying travel insurance ? Did you have any ? if not, what do you expect ? Full refund ? SQ done their best to provide free accommodation! jizzzzzz

The OP had a fair enough question.

As their flight arrived into the EU, and the OP's friends/relatives are used to EU rules, they were probably mistaken into believing they were entitled to EU compensation.

Certainly a valid question to raise, and the OP should have claimed it had they been entitled.

Unfortunately they aren't eligible in this case so it would come down to whether or not they wish to ask SQ for some sort of goodwill gesture.

Don't give yourself the grief of asking, as others have said, your hotel and transfers were covered that's all I would ever expect.

Perhaps SQ should not provide Hotel, transfers. and People might complain: SQ has very poor service, they should provide Hotel, transfers due to delayed flight.

Hard to make everyone happy :D

There are some passionate people on this forum. I like it. Cheers for the replies & banter

Things happen in life and I hate how the world has become full of selfish me me me, I deserve compensation type people.
No one got hurt, they treated you well. They didn't do it on purpose.
Just enjoy life and don't stress about compensation for minor issues

I should clarify that the OP may not be one of those people, and they could tell their relatives who told them to seek compensation to relax :)

Agree... when it comes to individuals dealing with individuals. Or other peers dealing with peers.

But it's very difficult when you have a major corporation holding all the cards and essentially doing what they want. Potential compensation is sometimes the only recourse someone has. If a passenger turns up 8 hours late for a flight, it's unlikely the airline will reaccommodate them without change fees, the additional fare, a fee for actually speaking to someone to make the change, and other additional fees such as wanting to select a seat.

I don't think standing up for your rights is necessarily being selfish.
