Yesterday I sent my first ex-NRT DONE4 off to Dublin to be taxed and they came back within the hour with a quote of 796,320 yen, implying taxes of $US450. Sounded good.

But thanks to the keen advice of QF009, I realised I had two LHR stopovers when one should've been a transit. To avoid the 80GBP APD, I changed my second LHR to a thru-connection, and sent it back to Dublin for the discount. (The only other thing to change was a CNS-SYD sector which I moved one day earlier.)

Silly me.

Now the itinerary has been priced at 11,560 yen more -- i.e. almost exactly $US100. I got the rate desk here in the USA to double-check it twice, and they said the new figure is correct. The agent, who seemed clueless about taxes, didn't/couldn't/wouldn't explain why the new fare with one APD, was more than the old one, which had 2 APDs.

I can understand that maybe they made a mistake the first time round and I shoulda grabbed it when I could. But I can't understand why a change to a non-american BA sector would result in an increase by a nice round USD figure like $100. Any idea, or do they just kinda make this stuff up?

The other oddity was that they quoted me a base pre-tax price of 744,200 yen. It's supposed to be 743,200. That's just spare change, but does anyone know why there'd be an extra thousand yen tacked on? Is it normal for AA offices to add a small issuance fee or something...?

Question: in your experience how often does the rate desk get it wrong -- should I change the itinerary back to what it was and send it back to be repriced, or was the original price too low to be correct anyway and it ain't worth the hassle?

Ask to see the breakdown of the taxes. It should be included in the e-ticket receipt. It will be a string of codes and numbers. Here is an example from my last DONE4, which was a paper ticket. The first entries are on the TAX/FEE/CHARGE lines on the left of the ticket:

399.62YQ
48.40GB
405XT

The the XT is expanded out in the FARE CALCULATION field as folows:

34.60UB38.00AU2.70QK7.40QR14.37WG21.98WY19.00HK11.50DE34.80RA37.20US12.30AY17.90MY126.30YR6.80YC8.60XY6.20XA5.60XF

So the agency issuing the ticket should be able to provide this type of breakdown. When asked for it, they will usually say something about it just being a whole lot of codes that you won't understand. Insist that you want to understand it and are willing to research what the codes mean.

I always check, and have pointed out mistakes to the issuer in the past.

Thanks!!

This may be a stupid question, but... how would I find out what the codes mean, or even what the taxes ought to be -- are there websites that provide such info? I wouldn't even know where to start to figure out what Domodedovo's airport tax to schengen or non-schengen countries is, for example... let alone what the relevant code looks like on an e-ticket.

Any hints??

Wow. You are hereby officially my hero, NM. This is like getting the rosetta stone I've always dreamed of... :D

Thanks!!

Now all we need is a table of airline specific taxes.

The Consolidated Travel site (Taxes) no longer appears to work. :(

There is not much that cannot be found on the net when you need it ...

QF's YQs are included in the link above, but getting it for other airlines can be a little tricky. I have scoured many Airline Press Releases to try to find the current fuel fines  .

Sorry to be self-absorbed, but... am I correct to assume that YQs wouldn't be an issue on an AA-issued ticket that doesn't contain any AA flights in it?

AA charges fuel fines for certain sectors, including Trans-Pacific and Trans-Atlantic, so there may be inclusions even with an AA ticket.
