Advanced Seat Selection no longer just a QFF benefit (if you want to pay)

Qantas - Charging for Standard Seat Choice?

Without any publicity (that I have heard anyway), Qantas now has an advanced seat request system allowing choice of seat when booking online. Great - its what you would expect from a premium, full fare "national" carrier. But on international flights, it now charges $20 for a standard seat request joining joining the ranks of discount no-frills airlines like Tiger and AsiaX. Is Qantas going cheap - why pay premium prices if you don't get anything for it? Its like going to the cinema and being charged another $5 for getting the seat of your choice! A sign that Qantas is going down the gurgler? Or just another successful attempt from Qantas to annoy and loose its customers?

HI Guys

Just got a Itineary from a travel agent for Mel - LAX return in July and they forgot to put my frequent flyer number on it! I went in to the booking via the reference number and added it but it hasnt appeared under my frequent flyer page yet? How long does this take ? Will it happen at all so i can do seat selection?

Thanks

Once you add the number to the booking it should be there straight away in most cases, although I've found occasionally it can take up to 24 hours. Any issues just give QF a call and they can sort it out.

Hmmmm

Im Qantas Club and PS . I called the qantas centre to put upgrade requests on cause i kept getting errors when pressing view/change my booking or upgrade. The lady said cause it was booked with a group booking (part of my trip being a tour most being in economy but some of us in Prem Econ) that may be why but just to wait a day or 2 and see what happens.

Anyone had any experience with this? i couldnt understand if it was a G class or something, but im Prem Econ, so i thought i could go pick some seats etc?!?!

If I understand it properly then group bookings in economy are not eligible for upgrades.

I have never come across a group booking class in premium economy but there is a possibility this may book into the award premium economy booking class or similar which means it is ineligible for upgrades.

That makes sense, although seat selection should still be possible even if the fare is not upgradeable (although on the award booking classes sometimes there are less seating options available).

Well heres the thing its a group travelling. The travel agent had the airfare component of the total package for melb -jfk return fares on economy for like 1500bucks return. But i wanted premium at bare minumum, so i coffed up the Going Rate for Prem Econ which was like 3000 or 3500 more i think. It is an upgradeable fare as i have called Qantas and they put the requests for upgrade to business (45,000 points) on for me. However its been more than 24 hours now and i still no seat selection for me?

I have it under the My Bookings tab but if i click on it i get errors. I can go to it via putting in the booking ref and last name on the front page, i see my upgrade requests and my frequent flyer number but again no seat selection?

Any ideas?

Couple of questions - has it been ticketed yet? If not this can cause issues. This usually results in two PNRs in the system - one will work for seat selection, the other won't. You've probably been given the PNR that won't work (as the other sits in the QF system - this happens with Buy Now Pay Later seats booked through QF as well). Once ticketed it should fix up. Also, have you paid the agent yet, or are they just holding? If not paid, then it's likely it won't yet be ticketed.

Of course I could be wrong here, and maybe there is a problem and you may need to call QF to fix.

Just booked a flight, Asiana metal, QF code-share. SYD-ICN, Y. Seats available to select, for a QFF Gold member.

If you look at some of these code shares, the operating airline sells a limited number of seats to the marketing carrier, hence the reason for the limited seat selection.

QF and SA have a similar arrangement.

It's almost as if QF buy a seat and are onselling it to you.

Yeah, l'm not upset or angry at all with what is available. It is a code-share and Asiana is Star. Was just showing number of seats available. Haven't flown Asiana, so looking forward to a new experience.

At least you're at the front :)

Not having re-read this whole thread, dad as a Bronze QFF was able to select seats for free on a domestic flight for next year, assume this is standard.

As a NB flying on the cheapest ticket I can get, I can do the same as well, just that they're all mainly seats from the middle and back. Should get interesting for me to see what seats will open up once I get PS and hopefully SG.

I flew OZ in business class SYD-ICN-MNL in July and the experience was good. Crew is good but that was a long flight and straight from one flight onto the next.

That being said I did take a walk around the economy section and that experience scared me....
