We want to fly to SYD from MEL in Feb 2013. Is it worth my while buying the tickets now or waiting and purchasing closer to when we need to travel?

It's not so much the cost of tickets (getting cheaper or more expensive) changing between now and then that's a concern, rather, the flights being cancelled or changed on us.

I'm not a frequent flyer, particularly domestic, so my experience with domestic airlines is somewhat limited.

Thanks.

Why not purchase QF tickets then? Even if they do change the times there will be enough flights (at least one every hour) to ensure you get one with timings that suit you.

I only book JQ flights a day or so before i fly now days as they do lots of stupid things and can really stuff up a trip.

I learn't a very valuable lesson once as they use to fly MKY to SYD so I booked a few month's out and then they cancelled it and I had to pay at the last minute for a MKY-BNE-SYD flight at a lot higher rate on QF.

The timing of the JQ flight was awesome.

Why not purchase QF tickets then?
Because Qantas is much more expensive and we're doing a holiday (catching the flight to SYD to get on a cruise ship) on a budget. If money was no object I'd be flying Qantas.
