I have just booked ADL-HKG with Cathay (CX104). I didn't realize it is via Melbourne.
How is the transfer made and is there plenty of time.
I assume all ticketing and baggage will be done in Adelaide, and it looks like about 70 mins in Melbourne.

i believe they do direct flights also, maybe worth seeing if you can change?

Pretty sure it is the same plane and generally same seat, and very quick turnaround, so time is not an issue, iirc, it is not a domestic flight you basically get off and get back on

I've done it in the opposite direction before (CX105 HKG-ADL-MEL). It isn't a domestic-international transfer like you would find going via QF in SYD.

You clear immigration in ADL and board CX104 to "HKG". The plane lands in MEL and you must leave the plane, are re-screened then go to the departure gate to re-board an hour or so later. You generally have the same seat. During this time, those that have come from HKG bound for MEL will leave, and there will be new passengers from MEL bound for HKG joining the plane.

I think this triangular routing by CX will end soon.

EDIT: Prepare for some panicked passengers upon departure for ADL as they realise they are on a MEL bound and not HKG bound flight. Not everyone reads the booking that says (Stops: 1).

You don't need to worry about time as ADL MEL HKG is all on the same aircraft so the second sector can't leave before the first one has arrived. You land at MEL international so you go through transit, no need to transfer from dom to int. You go through immigration and customs at ADL.

Yes all checkin and baggage is done at ADL.

HKG ADL is nonstop on the return leg.

There is no nonstop ADL HKG. A stop at MEL int is the best you can do. The alternative is to fly domestic to MEL or SYD then fly to HKG but then you may get a dom to int connection problem on a bad day.

Basically, when you arrive MEL, you get off the plane, go through transit security, and then back to the boarding gate. It's the same plane so you shouldn't be able to miss the "connection".

I seem to remember not that long ago Cathay touting that they would have a direct adl/hkg flight beginning of this year, never seemed to happen though!

From Nov there was meant to be direct flights Mon, Thu and Sat!

According to the Northern Summer schedule; CX will delink ADL & MEL, MEL will retain its x3 Daily service with an earlier arrival time into MEL at 11:20 (+1 Hr during AESDT) direct from HKG. I think ADL will get only x3-4 weekly services direct to HKG. Both will see a boost, especially MEL, in dedicated seats.
