Adelaide Airport has made a fresh appeal for Qantas to relaunch Adelaide-Auckland services under its partnership with Emirates, breaking Air New Zealand's monopoly on the route and creating a new link between New Zealand and Dubai.
In a submission to the Australian Consumer and Competition Commission, the airport said the airline's alliance with Emirates would free up a B737-800 aircraft on the Sydney-Auckland route which is served by the Gulf carrier's A380 aircraft.

I doubt NZ operate that route with a 738, though.

NZ use an A320 on this route. Much of muchness?

Bit of an uphill plea from Adelaide Airport. And linking NZ to nicely link up with Dubai services? What the - Adelaide trying to usurp international gateway traffic from the eastern seaboard? Well, I guess we should spread the love around...

They have just joined the dots from the Qantas submission that specifically said a reintroduction could be possible following the tie up with EK.

ADL-AKL and PER-AKL services were both mentioned as possibilities resulting from the Qantas/Emirates partnership in the submission to the ACCC.

That's nice to hear, though me also thinks it's possibly a bit of "buttering up" on the sides to sweeten the ACCC into approving the partnership, unless the ACCC forces it as a condition (unlikely).

In any case, it's Trans-Tasman so the NZ's equivalent competition commission also needs to grant approval (not just the QF/EK partnership, but any other new routes, e.g. QF on ADL/AKL or PER/AKL).

It'd be rather nice to see such services, and hopefully can be supported by appropriate traffic. That said, the PER and ADL people are still pining the loss of Asia services, though I'm sure they will not be keen to see them back on a 738.

In NZ its not the commerce commission which is the couterpart that will be granting approval, its the Transport Minister, Mr Brownlee, who will make his decision on advice from the Ministry of Transport under section 88 of the Civil Aviation Act 1990.

I thought the Open Skies arrangement meant that it was pretty much open slather? ie any NZ or Australian based airline can fly from anywhere to anywhere without specific approvals, including domestic (ie NZ could fly PER-SYD-AKL, and sell seats PER-SYD).

NZCC/ACCC / 'government approval' of some other kind comes into play with respect to alliances like QF/EK and VA/NZ because of the revenue sharing and schedule coordination aspects.

What about CBR-AKL?

If the EK alliance did free up a 737-800 then surely this aircraft could be used for a mixture of CBR-AKL and ADL-AKL.

Hmm. But seeing the accc draft ruling prevents joining ek and qf on SYD-akl, doesn't that mean it is likely the final ruling will match? Where will this extra plane come from?

I thought it was more along the lines of maintain the current net trans-Tasman capacity. Which could allow them to coordinate from SYD and reduce capacity provided that capacity is moved to somewhere else. :?:

Maybe. But the obvious assumption from them is that the accc draft rule will be overturned. I'm pretty sure (haven't checked) that other airlines have contested and suggest that SYD to akl should remain as it is... hence the accc draft ruling.
