Accessing AFF with Mobile Device

No app for Windows Phone :(.

Also no mobile version after these changes... On full desktop mode can't post. Just spent five minutes trying and now resorted to typing in OneNote then copy + paste.

I use the Android app a lot on the Samsung phone. Just noticed for the first time it was not updating with new posts. For awhile was just showing the last posts of 6 hours ago. It has updated now but has not done this before.

I have no idea why anyone would not use the app to read threads. (even if it was stuffed up my eyesight. ;)

The app is not foolproof. Sometimes you can't view attached images using the app (it appears as a "broken" image), which forces you to use the "Open in Browser" function.

Also, as mentioned if you are not a Silver or a Gold member, the app is of quite limited use to you.

Finally, as others mentioned, if the app is not supported on your mobile device, well, out of luck. (Probably the main ones missing out here are the Windows Phone users).

Before I moved to a smart device I had been asking for a mobile version of AFF to be refined for ages (and mainly because my attempts to access AFF on the road was via old, slow GPRS packet rather than 3G). I'm glad there's a mobile version but admittedly the UI painfully needs work. I'm not sure how it can be done - the last time I discussed with a mod about the mobile version of AFF, they said it was just a skin - there was no explicit version (or backend) of the site which renders AFF into a mobile version. vBulletin simply supplies a "mobile skin" which you turn on with a switch. Obviously, it's not the best out there (or at least when rendering AFF).

One of the problems I had in the old days when I wanted to access AFF mobile a lot more (the app version was in its infancy then) was you would get the desktop version of the site but it would be extremely difficult to get access to the mobile version (because you had to find a specific drop-down box; apart from the fact that the mobile version was only for Silver and Gold, so you needed to sign in). One of the suggestions I had put forward was there be a link or something (maybe near the top, maybe in a button, or just a separate page, e.g. www.australianfrequentflyer.com.au/mobile) so those that wanted to access the mobile version could do so easily. Maybe there could be a similar thing here (most company websites have an option somewhere on the page to switch between desktop and mobile versions) - the setting is stored in a cookie (which, hopefully, for most people will be persistent enough so they can browse AFF smoothly in at least a few sessions). That said, AFF is pretty much running off the vBulletin platform with not much else running off the side (from what I can understand)....

On my Samsung Galaxy S3 I use Dolphin Browser (rather than the stock supplied Internet) which allows me to change user agents (so I can force all websites to render as if I were browsing through a desktop). As mentioned, Chrome offers the same thing.

Apologies if this has already been answered, but why cant i view most photos (ie trip photos) on the mobile app?

Do you get a "broken" icon like I do?

Seems to be common for attachments. Most pictures hotlinked from non-AFF URLs seem to be OK.

I was wondering if there's a way to make the font bigger on the iPad? I am not getting any younger and am having trouble reading it without my glasses (which I prefer not to wear!). I have tried adjusting the default font on the iPad with no luck. Any advice would be most welcome.

The normal thumb and forefinger technique to expand the text size works fine on my iPad for AFF.

I don't know about the iOS version but in the Android version there is a setting (see "Settings" tab) which allows you to change the font size. I guess in line with many iOS apps, the same settings may be located under the AustFreqFly app section in the common Settings "app" (i.e. the "cogs" icon app).

Unfortunately this setting only affects the size of font when you are reading a thread. It doesn't change the size of font for the entire app.

On a separate note, I think the app on Android is showing posts at AEDT time but AEST time when I'm logged in?

I don't understand the point of your winky - there's no more button either. It's a small thing but I'm finding it frustrating because no-one else seems to have it!

First up, I see you're using an iPad!

Are you using a web browser (such as Safari or Chrome) where you type in www.australianfrequentflyer.com.au or are you using the AustFreqFly app from the App Store?

If you are not logged in AFF (App or Browser version) will display the Server Time (currently AEDT). When you log in, it displays the time you have set in your settings. I suspect you have AEST in your settings. Hope this helps..

hi all newbie here. i couldn't log in on the app on my phone. getting an error message to contact admin but don't know how :/

I am logged in on iPhone and now getting ads across the bottom of the screen on the thread listing or latest screens. It disappears when I enter a thread.

Has AFF mobile been "enhanced"?

Logged out then back in and it's gone.

Must be a bug.

I'm using the iPad app. Did I fail to say that in my first post?

I'm using my iPad now (I won't say where) :p

The button is "Settings" in the bottom right:

Look under the third header, "Topics & Posts: Font Size", there you can change it to the largest available, and here is a comparison, regular and large.
