I was reading on the AC website that you can purchase a single access pass to their lounges. I mentioned that it need to be requested and paid for prior to the arrival and I am assuming that this can be done through some type of MMB function. Do you have to book direct with CA to access this service of can it still be done if I book through AMEX. I can get myself and one other access based on *G however there are 3 of us travelling. I am not fussed if I book 2 or 3 via AMEX or 2 on AMEX and 1 direct if that is what is required. I know very little about AC and may have only flown them once or twice.

Thanks

There used to be a PP lounge in Vancouver - it's not fantastic but it was better than nothing. That may be another option

@VPS I did consider PP however when searching availability YVR seems to be international only. I may just take the punt a book MrsM a ticket with AC direct and then see if I can buy her a pass under these rules (if the suspension is lifted in time).

If it does not work out I guess we will all just have to stay in the terminal, MissM will will most likely protest and then go onto say something like "Dad you can get in with a guest, mum can just stay outside";)

I'm sure I'm missing something, but as I'll be flying AC through YVR next year, I'll venture to ask.

I dare say you are flying J ... is not MLL access granted by class of service? I used to regularly hang out there on my way to and from Calgary. MLLs were never anything flash, but its been abt 6 years since I was in one.

I would have flown J however it was a 2 to 1 decision travel in Y. For family travel I always have budget in mind (sort of) as I know their spending habits. They were presented with a choice, fly J or Y and whatever is saved on flights they could spend on stuff ;) when I put the cost to travel J in front of them they chose Y. At some point in the future I am sure I will be blamed for this

Having just come back from Canada last week and having had to connect in Vancouver twice I reckon I can shed some light here.

The Maple Leaf Lounge in the domestic lounge isn't much to write home about. It tends to be packed with long queues, there are no showers as AC continues to use the excuse of COVID to keep the showers closed. Food can be okay but is it worth spending $50 or even $25 to be in a packed lounge during COVID with food that is certainly well below what you can get at the many bars and restaurants in Vancouver? Probably not. In terms of access if you are flying J or have Star Alliance Gold status with a carrier like United, that's fine. If you have *Gold status and you are travelling with a spouse and a kid I don't see why you would need to do anything at this point as it's my understanding that kiddos can get into the lounge for free with their parents.

Are there other lounges at Vancouver? Yes! In particular, there are Plaza Premium lounges located in both the domestic and international terminals. I haven't been to the international one but went into the Domestic one thanks to my AmEx Platinum card. It was less crowded and the food was comparable to that of the Maple Leaf lounge. You can buy in to the lounge if you don't have AmEx Platinum just show up to the lounge and pay there (the lounge is in the central concourse where gates B,C meet up of the domestic terminal near the piano). I haven't been to the international terminal Plaza Premium lounge but passing by it prior to boarding AC33, it didn't look too bad.

For the international terminal, and supposing you are flying on the evening service to BNE or SYD (AC 33, 35, 37) the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge and if travelling in paid business class Signature Suite Lounge can be quite tempting. The reason I say this is the lounge becomes essentially an exclusive lounge for AU travellers past 9 PM since the remaining flights out of the International terminal are just AU flights at that time of night. Unlike the domestic terminal, there are showers here and they aren't too bad (not as nice as the ANA showers at NRT but not as bad as the Turkish showers at Dulles).

While the various domestic Maple Leaf lounges - at YVR, YUL, YYZ and even at YYT (St John's Newfoundland) are nothing special, the Signature Lounge in the international section of the YVR terminal was excellent.

Even though there are limited flights from YYT each day, mainly to Toronto, Halifax and Montreal, the lounge opens at 0400 and had a very satisfactory breakfast available, and even espresso coffee (from a machine). Around lunchtime the YYZ lounge was very busy and noisy but better than the Qantas Club lounges, in my opinion, especially in the selection of food available. A surprising number of people were having a discussion at the entrance about why they were being refused entry.

The YVR Signature Lounge is for paid J pax only so I did not any Aeroplan members there and looked to be exclusively table service. There was a seperate entrance after entering the main Maple Leaf Lounge and up another level. You could have returned to the main Lounge if you had work to do. I did not notice any showers, but did notice that Moet was their champagne of choice and the menu, while limited, was excellent, as was the service - we had eaten already so limited ourselves to Dim Sum and Ice Cream. There was also a quite extensive buffet if you preferred something not on the menu.

As noted above, the lounge looked like it was only for the SYD and BNE departures in the late evening although there was one HKG flight at 0130. A few Aussies were well into the spirits when I arrived and looked quite worse for wear on a VA domestic flight some 18 hours later.

It also has a good view over the International apron.

To close this out we travelled Y on the red eye, the girls did not cope that well and a couple of days later I was questioned and lectured as to why this decision was made. When I reminded them it was their call the response was ‘we don’t remember agreeing to this.
