AC to fly B787 BNE-YVR from June 2016

Good on AC for expanding their presence into Australia.
BNE has certainly been fortunate to secure new routes in the past 18 months from various airlines including the new route to NRT on QF, HNL on both HA & JQ & now YVR on AC.
Not such a need to transit in SYD now for those living in the Sunshine state.

And a key reason why QF IMHO won't go 2x4x2 if it orders 789s

Thanks Boomy! Wow ... as a frequent flyer to Canada, this is great news. Currently I alternate between AC SYD-YYC and QF SYD-LAX then AC LAX-YYC (or their SYD-YVR service when its running).

The AC service is a 777 and their J is pretty good. On a new 787 with new J config, it will change my flying habits.

What's the best Star Alliance lounge at BNE?

Edit: No e-mail from AC announcing this ... either a good scoop by AusBT or coughpy AC PR. OK, here's the announcement on the AC web site.

What's the best Star Alliance lounge at BNE?...
That would be the AirNZ lounge, but "best" is not an adjective I would use ... more like "least worst" or "only option". (To be fair, NZ have announced an imminent major upgrade there.)

Hopefully upgrade will complete by June 2016.

Meanwhile there is also SK lounge in BNE, no idea if it's any better then Koru.

Glad to hear about the upgrade. I was going to say that corporately, AC's attitude to lounge amenity is well short of what we in Oz expect.

Let's see if it's available with LM once booking starts 16th July! Doubt they will release any award space though especially with only 20 J seats... Anyone sucessfully booked SYD - YVR on their 777 in J using LM?

No, but I have booked using Aeroplan miles once, and looked at it a couple of other times. Availability is there when I looked 2-3 months out, but of course the pool of seats is very likely different for Aeroplan Vs LifeMiles.

I'm going to try to book the new 787 inaugural flight using Aeroplan miles, but will cancel out if my client decides to revenue ticket me there!

Can't see why not, you can book all kinds of F awards with LM in much smaller cabins as well as J awards on B787s.

I was tempted to book the "special" SYD-YVR-NRT route once, found reasonable availability on LM but it didn't fit my schedule at that time.

I got a couple of AC LM redemptions last year that I flew in May, one of the SAW-FRA-Toronto for the cheap miles and then YVR-HKG-SIN-DPS for about $1100, got to try the two versions of ther 77W, but that was back before the system lost a lot of options and functionality... That 787 doesn't look to bad...

Except for the 3-3-3 Y class photos right at the end of the AusBT article, even with the extreme photoshopping and stretching in that last picture the 3-3-3 Y seat looks absolutely horrible, they would have to pay me to fly Y transpac in their 3-3-3 Y seat - its a long way to Canada.

The Air Canada B787 PE seats and J suites do look very nice though. If they are reasonably priced will be good to have another option to get to Canada for some.

Might be a factor in deciding whether to go to Toronto in June...

Was hoping for MEL, but that may be a tad too far to be economical.

BNE is over 800 miles closer to YVR than MEL, which from what I heard might be pushing the 778 a little too far (at least if AC wants to avoid semi regular stops at Fiji a la the old QF8). When AC get the 789, a MEL service might be more realistic.
