I'm finally about to book a RTW OW trip, global explorer (through flight centre). We a doing a fair bit of US/CA travel and I was wondering is there any tips or advice when booking this type of flight. Can you still do the instant upgrades in the US? I would like to maximise SCs where possible..

Forgot to mention the routing:
BNE
lax
dfw
Calgary, can
chicago (stopover only)
jfk
Munich(via lhr)
suface sector back to lhr
Dubai
hong kong
sin
BNE

What class?

Can't do instant upgrade on LONE fares.

Would suggest you look at booking through AA rather than FC who will undoubtedly use QF plate and charge you service fees.

Cheaper if you do your London stopover pre Munich rather than Dubai.

Too maximise SCs, add more segments

Remember that a oneworld Explorer and oneworld's Global Explorer are two different fare types. More information here oneworld - Round-the-World Fares.

The oneworld Explorer package is limited to 16 stops and is continent based; the Global Explorer is miles restricted, making it a bit more difficult to maximise status credits (as you have to keep within a certain number of miles).

Do you perhaps mean you're trying to book at oneworld Explorer rather than a Global Explorer?

IIRC, Global explorer fares are also limited to 16 segments.

The oneworld explorer is Basically a segment limited product. Pricing related to number of continents visited. Except for country of origin, stopovers are not specifically limited. The segments are limited in the following ways:
  • Max 16
  • Max 4 (or 6 for North America) per continent.

The Global explorer is Mileage limited and pricing is related to distance tiers for the booked travel.
Segments per booking are restricted to 16 maximum. Stopovers are specifically limited and the permitted number is five in total for the lowest distance tier and 4 "per region" for the other tiers.
