AA's New Boeing 737 adds headroom and legroom

BOEING has unveiled its new upgraded 737, promising more space for passengers and a fuel-conserving engine.

The aircraft boasts a taller cabin allowing passengers more headroom and the ability to stand up in their seats.
 
These new "articulated-recline" seats are the ones that move the seat forward to recline right? Like what Cathay put in their new economy class?

No, it's nothing to do with the seats, which are furnished by the airline not the manufacturer. Boeing is referring to redesigned bins (called "pivot bins") that when closed sit inclined upwards and inwards at about 45% to horizontal (like in B777) instead of being horizontal. At present the door of the bin simply swings upwards - the whole bin pivots with the new design. What Boeing have not said is that when the bins are open (i.e. when most people are actually standing up) the bins are in the same position as present so no easier to load/unload overhead baggage. However the bins are bigger so more room overhead which is welcome.

Other changes include LED lighting, new sculpted interior panels, new Passenger Service Units and better insulation (quieter cabin).

The video shown doesn't seem to show that sort of bin design - it looks relatively normal to me.

The seats however do seem to be different, with the seat cushion sliding forward as the back reclines.

So any chance of QF or DJ upgrading to these?

It's pretty similar to current QF 738s except sceen fractionally bigger, and laptop area in J(F) seats. Bigger carryon space is always a good thing.

Would you suggest that the pivot bins may reduce the likelihood of items falling from the bins when opened?

you're right. the ****heads from newsltd have shown an American Airlines promo with their new B737s replacing MD80s. But this is not the new Sky Interior referred to in the article.

unfortunately file size upload constraints prevent me from showing you the side by side comparison of the new vs current bins but it is quite a difference.

Seats have nothing to do the aircraft manuafacturer. Any airline can put any seat it wants in any aircraft. Boeing naturally just chooses the best ones it can find to enhance the rest of its product.

The new interior will be the only one available from 2011 and it's an option during 2010.

CrazyDave, i presume DJ are looking at whether it is cost effective for them to switch for any new deliveries?

And you'd think QF would do the same, although i wonder how this works with their plans for fitting seatback IFE to the 738s (trans-tasman a/c)?
